Had to quit my job as a bus driver, I was tired of people talking behind my back
Trail mix
This is one of the more important stories… one of the only stories shared in all 4.. synoptics have a bunch they share, but this is the only one that all 4 share.
This affects the most amount of people with a miracle… 5000 MEN but there were kids and women there… 10-20K people were there. These people need to eat and he takes this kids food and feeds all of them at one time
The disciples get twelve baskets left over and that is a big deal too… and this is an amazing moment… and there are some details for what it means for you and I and how we live our lives
John 6:4 ESV
4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
That backdrop is very important… most of us dont really have the history down with us… but the passover was the moment that Jews celebrated and really came together to celebrate God saving them from Egypt....
Manna in the wilderness… give us this day our daily bread.... the hebrew name for it is literally what is it.... God literally provides bread for his people in the old testament and God is going to come and do the same thing… he is YHWH he is God in the flesh and there is this super layered thing… and later he will go on to say that HE is the bread of heaven...
John 6:1–2 ESV
1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.
He was in the prime of his preaching and people are all around him and he moves away from the crowd for a minute and he needs some rest and he has just preached one of the greatest messages in all the new testaments
Preaching is like the same stress as an 8 hour work day…
So he gets to the other side about a 4 mile journey 1:20 walk or 45 min sail… in this moment hes just chillin its a boring moment… I can imagine they are just waiting for him to say something and Jesus is just chilling not saying anything… and I bet some of those guys are like dude teach us something else where are we going what are we doing what is next.... and Jesus si just taking his time just relax and if he can do it, so can you…
All of us are called to discipleship… and this could have been a moment for that, these are the people that he likes to spend time with and this is ordinary.. and some of us need to be released from this idea of produce produce produce all the time....
CS LEWIS
Some of you are facing burnout… Carey Nieuwhof if we never take a break we will break… some signs
Passion Fades
No longer feel the highs and lows… its all flat line
Little things make you disproportionately emotional
Every person drains you
You become cynical
Nothing seems to satisfy you… it seems ever elusive
You cant think straight
Your productivity is droping
Your self medicating… so you feel somethign or feel nothing
You don’t laugh anymore
Sleep and time off no longer refuel you
What to do about it
Tell someone you should never live your life alone.
Develop a circle around you
Lean into God, he is the answer… its not material
Rest
How do you defeat workaholism… you gotta pray it out and ask God to give you a passion for other things.... and I noticed going to the pool and doing things with the kids that it is betteer now than I used to be… I get so nervous going but my kids end up almost always outliving my expectations
THe way you dont burn out is make sure you take a rest...
SO jesus is tired and taking a rest and he knows what it takes to be healthy and thjere is a difference in knowing what it takes right to be healthy and actually doing it. Working out
There is such a huge difference between knowing and doing and most of you know what you need to be spirotually healthy but we don’t do it...
John 6:2 ESV
2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.
Jesus is doing these miracles and people are believing in Jesus because of miracles… and we should stop and realize we have to and can pray for miracles that will point people to Jesus… and yes there are moments Jesus says all you want is a miracle.. but you can see that it CAN point him because there is something more powerful in the universe and that is why these people are actually believing… hes not doing magic trickls just for the sake of it..
Yancy said that the miracles Jesus did didnt really change the state of pain on the planet, but that is not the reason he came…the miracles give us a glimpse of what the world was meant to be and a hope that one day God will do the same and his intentions for this earth
The miracles of Jesus always point to something and authenticate the gospel… and point to what his work on the cross is supposed to do for us… there is a symbol of that in all of the miracles
IF Jesus miracles are legit, why can’t we see them on youtube… verified… God exists… we would believe… God doesnt always do those miracles becasue that is not always what God is about… the assumption of your question si that God says my main task is to prove myself to people… maybe that isnt what God cares about… Maybe he isnt trying to say I hope people know I exist… and if htat is what he is trying to do every day he’s doing a poor job of it.... and when you bump into passages of GOd saying its for my glory… maybe God isnt who you think he is… of course the miracle doesnt always happen… should we go after it yes… but Jesus knew the miracle was short term… what is your faith built on… it can point you to Jesus, but it shouldn’t be based on that miracle...
John 6:3–4 ESV
3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
Three times John mentions the passover… and he is the reason we know his ministry was three years… John is the only reason we know that he did this for three years… because he is invovled in three different passovers
John 6:5 ESV
5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”
The reason he asks phillip they tell us is because phillip is from bethsada… you know when you go to someones hometown and you ask wheres the good place to eat.... why is he asking phillip? HE knows what he is about to do… hes about to feed all tehse people from so little… so instead of just jumping to it and seeing the child and asking him for the fish… he asks hey phillip how do we take care of this? And he involves phillip in something he could to do on his own… Paul says we are colaborers with Christ… we get the opportuinty to colaborate with God.
WE should be doing somethign with him… he asks us in our life to take part...
John 6:6 ESV
6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
Hes testing him… and so many times we run from the test and he is trying to make us into who he needs us to be...
And here is philips answer to him when Jesus is asking him to participate.... go make a meal for them… go share the gospel....
John 6:7 ESV
7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”
He is saying eight months of my salary wouldnt even cut it… he didnt ask him how much did it cost… he answered the question that Jesus isnt asking… we see in a glass darkly paul tells us…we dont clearly see what God is asking us to do so we mess it up… he asks a question… we answer something dumb… but he wants us to participate
Jesus is going to multiply out exponentially this thing and he is going to
SO Jesus says hey we got to feed these people...
John 6:8–9 ESV
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”
Philip solve a problem… and hes like heres the deal Jesus we gotta ggo work on this for eight months… and teh guy who wasnt asked just says Jesus lets try this… and if you pass on teh opportunity someone else will do it.. and the question is will Philip be able to celebrate Andrews win… and this is a huge problem in the church other pastors cant celebrate each other...
Judge the fruit… not the watering schedule… and this is what pastors do to other pastors… they watered at 5 o clock but we all know the real time to water is 11 PM
And so hes like is this enough? and there is a BOY… helicopter parenting//. in that culture he was just out there… he has five barley loaves… barley is what poor people used.., it was the cheapest of all bread… and we would look and think God cant use this little useless kid… but he does… thats how he has used me too… an d he will use you… and you think you are too dirty messed up too much… and here Jesus is using this unnamed boy.... not talking about the son of… and he is about to get used…
Barley loaves were for the poor WIlliam Barclay said
“There is a regulation in the Mishnah about the offering that woman who has committed adultery must bring. With all offerings of food, they consisted of flour and wine and oil intermixed. Ordinarily the flour used was wheat, but it was laid down that in the case of an offering for adultery, the flour could be barely. For the barley is the food of animals, and the womans sin, was teh sin of an animal. Barley bread was the bread of the very poor and the very hopeless.” Just like you feel sometimes when you have committed that sin… and your life in Jesus hands can be multiplied out and bless so many people that he moves… and in his hands he creates manna for these people...
two fish.... and the greek word is not the normal word for fish… normally ichthus.... here obserion it literally means… already cooked pickled fish and salted… more like a sardine from the sea of gallilee.. not like the huge fish in the movies… the cheapest fish,,, and he takes it and does this amazing miracle....
John 6:10–11 ESV
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.
He gives thanks, and he prays… you are involved in this… as much as they wanted… Jesus wasn’t cheap… he gave over abundance...
John 6:12 ESV
12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”
THere are leftovers because JEsus does more… not less… hes going over and above...
ANd the cross is that moment where God doesn’t hold back
