INTRODUCTION:

1.      Review last weeks study

a.       The source of temptation.

1)      God tempts no man (v.13)

2)      Man is tempted by his own desires (v.14-15)

3)      Temptation is not the nature of God (v17)

4)      God wants us to be born again (v.18).

Do you ever do this?

While someone else is talking, were thinking about what we are going to next instead of about what is being said to us.  We know others are worth more care and attention.  But the habit is hard to break.  We need to slow down and really listen to what the other person has to say.

Why is it so difficult to be a good listener?

Because I am selfish and want to get my point across.

I.                  THE PREPARATIONS NECESSARY

TO WITHSTAND TRIALS & TEMPTATION, 1:19-27

(1:19-27) Introduction: without these preparations, temptation can never be conquered

1.      Be quick to hear the word of God (v.19-21).

2.      Be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only (v.22-25).

3.      Bridle and control the tongue (v.26).

4.      Visit the needy and keep yourself unspotted from the world (v.27).

A.    (Verse 19a) PREPARATION #1: BE SWIFT TO HEAR THE WORD OF GOD

1.      Receiving the Word so that a person’s soul will be saved.

2.      If Satan deceives us this is one thing, but if a person deceives himself this is very dangerous.

a.       Many are deceived about their salvation (Matthew 7:22-23).

b.      Many believers are deceiving themselves concerning their walk with the Lord.

c.       Jesus said we are to take heed to how you hear (Luke 8:18).

d.      We need to listen with our hearts and no just our ears.

There are five things a person must do to be able to receive the Word of God, What are they?

1a.   (Verse 19b) By being slow to speak

1.      We need to stop and think about what we are going to say before we say it

—    Proverbs 10:19 says--In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.  The righteous person will listen well and consider carefully before he speaks, and will restrain his anger lest it lead to hasty, nasty, irretrievable words (1:19 cf 3:9-10).

a.       Many times we argue with God in our hearts about what He tells us in His Word

2a.   (Verse 19c) By being slow to anger:

An angry man does not do what God says

1.      Do not be angry at God or His Word

a.       Talk about being convicted by God’s Word and getting angry

—    A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1 NKJV)

—    He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly. (Proverbs 14:29 NKJV)

2.      Anger is the opposite of patience.

3a.    (verse 21a) By putting aside all filthiness

1.      Taking off a dirty garment and putting it aside

a.       Means “wax in the ear” if we have wax in the ear’s of our hearts then we cannot hear the Word of God

4a.   (Verse  21b) By putting aside all overflow of wickedness

1.      Is a picture of a garden overgrown with weeds and cannot be controlled.

2.      To hear God’s word we must take out the weeds in our hearts

3.      Weeds also are a sign of hard and dead soil

5a.   (Verse 21c) By receiving the Word with meekness

1.      In order to receive God’s Word our hearts must be prepared

a.       Dirt must be prepared to receive seeds to be planted in it.

b.      The parable of the sower    Matt 13:1-9  &  13:18-23

B.     (Verse 22a) PREPARATION #2: BE A DOER OF THE WORD & NOT A HEARER ONLY

1.      Hearing a good Bible study is not enough

2.      Just listening to God is not enough

3.      Don’t just mark you Bibles but let the Bible mark your heart

4.      Jerimiah 31:31 “I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts

1b.   (Verse 22b) A hearer only deceives himself

1.      Hearing the Word of God and not putting it into practice is not acceptable to God.

2.      The World around us does not read the Bible, they read you and me, our lives, the way we live, we are living Bibles.

3.      The Bible demands Action.

2b.   (Verse 23-24) A hearer only forgets what he heard

What does James say a person is like if he hears the word but does not do it according to verses 23 &24?

1.      A man observing his face in a mirror

2.      He observes himself or is looking in the mirror

3.      Immediately goes away and forgets what he saw in the mirror

a.       We use mirrors to see what we look like on the outside.

b.      The Bible is a mirror to show us what we look like on the inside.

Everyday we look into a mirror to brush our hair, see what we look like after we get dressed, or even for the women to put on makeup and cover up any flaws that they might have.

Illustration of President Lincoln’s wart.     A man painted President Lincoln trying to cover up his wart but the President said “paint me as I am, wart and all.”

4.      This is why we need to spend time in the Word of God, so that His Spirit will show us by His Word all of our warts on the inside.

—    The Bible says in Psalm 139:23-24, Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties;  And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.

5.      A Camera shot of a person shows the outside

6.      The Bible is like an X-Ray Machine to see the inside of us

Lets us therefore, read the Bible allowing God to show us what is on the inside and not being “fast to anger” but “slow to anger” about our sin.

Illustration:

1.      A doctor must spend time with you when he examines you and not be in a hurry

2.      Jesus the Great Physician wants to spend time with you examining you by His Word

3.      Maybe you don’t want to spend time in the Word because you don’t want to know the truth

3b.   (Verse 25) A doer of the Word is blessed

According to verse 25 there is 4 things a person must do to be blessed, what are they?

a.       Look into the perfect law of liberty - being set free from the bondage’s of sin and death eternal when we obey it.

b.      Continue in the perfect law of liberty - you must continue do not give up

c.       Not a forgetful hearer of the word  -

d.      But a doer of the work

C.    (Verse 26) PREPARATION #3: BRIDLE & CONTROL THE TONGUE

What does James say about the tongue in verse 26?

a.       If you do not control you tongue, you are deceiving yourself

b.      No matter how religious a person is, if that person has bad language coming out of his mouth he does not please God

What does James 3:6-12 & 4:11 say about our tongues and speech?

D.    (Verse 27) PREPARATION #4: PRACTICE PURE RELIGION—VISIT THE NEEDY AND

KEEP YOURSELF USPOTTED FROM THE WORLD

According to verses 26 and 27 how do people who THINK they are religious differ from those who are

truly religious?

1.      By visiting the fatherless and widows in their time of need

2.      By a person keeping himself unspotted from the world

3.      Religious means --“outward practice”

4.      Pure religion means --“practicing God’s Word and sharing it with others, through speech, service, and separation from the world.”

5.      Separation from the world means  -- “to stay away from anything that is opposing God and His Word.”

—    No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. (2 Timothy 2:4 NKJV)

—    “Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. (Matthew 13:22 NKJV)

—    And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2 NKJV)

—    Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.   For all that is in the world----the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life----is not of the Father but is of the world. (1 John 2:15-16 NKJV)
