The Person and Work of the Savior (1-3)

Luke wrote the works and words of the Lord Jesus in his Gospel.
The message is all about Jesus, what He has done and what he has taught.
Luke recorded just some of the “infallible proofs” of the resurrection.
The empty tomb and the angels Luke 24:5-6 “And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,”
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus - Luke 24:15 “While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.”
The secret appearance to Peter Luke 24:34 “saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!””
The appearance to the whole group Luke 24:36 “36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!””
There were many other appearances of the Lord Jesus, some in Galilee, some in Judea. The Apostle Paul records that he appeared to more than 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15). He ate with them, cooked for them, “fished” with them, fellowshiped, and instructed them for 40 days.

The Promise of the Spirit (4-5)

The role of the Holy Spirit begins to take shape in the book of Acts. He is mentioned 57 times in this book.
He had an active role in Creation - Gen 1:2 “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
He guided the prophets of old. Now he is coming in power upon all the people of God!
As much as the Spirit is mentioned, His emphasis is Jesus - whose name is mentioned 71 times in Acts.
The work of the Holy Spirit empowered and directed the proclamation of the Gospel through the disciples.
He convicts sinners of their need for Jesus - John 16:8 “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:”
He guides believers in their walk with Jesus - John 16:13-14 “13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
He empowers followers to be witnesses for Jesus - Acts 1:8 “8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”

The Purpose of the Saints (6-8)

They were to wait - through prayer.
They were ready for the kingdom to begin right then. As believers, we can get caught up in being busy with that which the Lord has not given us to do.
Jesus did not deny that there would be a kingdom. Instead, he refocused the disciples on the mission. The earthly kingdom of Christ will certainly come, but it is future. Our task is to be witnesses.
They were to be empowered by the Spirit to witness.
First in their hometown - Jerusalem. Then their country, then the country next to them, then throughout the world.
Missions starts right here at home and expands outward.
What are we to do? We are living proof of the promise of Jesus to the disciples! Nearly 2,000 years after the Lord ascended that small band.
Seek the Lord prayerfully.
Receive the power of the Spirit as you go.
Tell others about Jesus.
