Review

We are now on Thursday night.
This is the day before our Lord will be tried and crucified.
Jesus is spending this time with His disciples
We talked last time, that Jesus lobed His disciples, and He loved them to the end.
We also talked about
Jesus washing the feet of His disciples.
Peter did not want Jesus to do that.
But Jesus showed His perfect example of humility, and instructs his disciples to do the same.
He also makes it clear that Jesus know one will betray Him.
So we will continue.
This is a sad story.
John 13:21–25 NAS
21When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.” 22The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24So Simon Peter *gestured to him, and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25He, leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

V. 21-25 Who is it??!!

Jesus gives His disciples a disturbing revelation.
one of them will betray Him
This is after Jesus washes the feet of all of them.
This act of service, that none of the disciples agreed to, now have hear the news that one among them would betray.
they look at one another (who is he talking about?) Who could it be?
This is the first time in scripture that John (the writer of this book) mentions himself (as the disciple that Jesus loved)

V. 26-30

John 13:26–30 NASB95
26 Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of for the feast”; or else, that he should give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night.
a morsel is a small piece of bread
He dipped the morsel and handed to Judas. And satan entered into him
The dripping
In this time, when there is a banquet. What did we talk about last week?
The master of the banquet did not get up to serve
But Jesus got up (as the master) to serve the ones he loves.
The Master of the banquet would get up dip a a morsel into a tasty dip and pass it to a guest who is a special guest of honor.
Jesus did this with Judas.
This could be saying two things
1. Because Jesus was able to hand this to Judas, we know that Jesus was close to Judas.
2. Also it would say that Jesus considered Judas a friend.
We could say that when Jesus said that one of them was going to betray Him, they looked around but possibly didn’t look at Judas.
Jesus telling He to do what he is going to do, do it quickly.
Once again the disciples didn’t know why this was said. They did understand
They are think away from what was happening.
Satan had entered into Judas
εἰσῆλθεν (essay-home-a) to enter This word is used throughout the gospels in conjunction with demon possession
We see this in Mark 5”12, Luke 8:30, 11:26
This is not possession of demons but of satan.

Do what you do

Jesus tells Judas to go and do what he had already set is heart and mind to do.
but the disciples thought that Jesus was sending Judas out for assignment
Because again Judas had the money .
But Judas left and it was night.
v. 31-32
John 13:31–33 NASB95
31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 “Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’
now that Judas left, all of the events were set.
now is the time for the glory of God to happen, in the death of Jesus Christ.
Jesus tell them where He s going, they cant (just like the Jews) confusion.......
But there is a difference.
He does not tells His disciples that they will not find Him. John 7:34
John 7:34 (NASB95)
34 “You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
2. And He tells the Jews that they will die in there sin
John 8:21 NASB95
21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.”
but
This is a temporary matter on separation between Jesus and the disciples that He loves
He calls them Little Children.
Jesus loves them, and they are safe and protected.
Jesus had been “with” them for a time (12:8, 35; 14:9; 16:4);
in contrast to his enemies, however, who would never find him,
His disciples would find Him in a new way when he returned—that is, he would be with them in a new way.

Love one another, true disciples

John 13:34–35 NASB95
34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The scriptures are clear.
We are commanded to
“love the Lord with...” Deut 6:5,
“love your neighbor as yourself” Lv 19:18
Jesus here tells the disciples to love one another
This is a new command/new covenant as His people
This command loving one another, and a form of identification
We are His, and the world knows this because of our love for one another

But Peter:Where are you going?

John 13:36–38 NASB95
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.” 37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
Peter is still bothered by what Jesus said earlier.
He wants to know where Is He going
Jesus assures him that He cant follow, but soon He will
Peter shows his heart again, He says He wants to go with Him
Peter says that he will lay down his life for Jesus.

v. 38

Jesus knows better,
He knows mans strengths and weakness
We say, we will do this, or do that.
Jesus knows all. and He knows what will be the end result.
Jesus knows the heart of Peter, but He also knows that Peters loves for Him will be set to the side to save his own life.
Jesus knows that Peter will do the opposite of what he says He will do.
This is something that we need to look at.
Peter will not lay down his life for Jesus....…but Jesus would lay down His life for Peter.
Peter would not lay down his life for Jesus......but Peter would deny knowing Jesus three times.
This of the pain and suffering and Joy that our Lord is going through.
He has finished His earthly ministry
The people that He loved, they people that He cried over (Luke 19:41-44) will soon reject and deny Him.
He is about toe enter into the wrath of God for all the sin of the world, though He committed none.
One of the 12 that he loves will turn on Him.
One would deny even knowing Him
All the while God will be glorified, the end of being at war with God is about to happen
The hope for salvation is coming.
