Introduction

Advice is not something we have to apply but is never bad to receive...
`It helps us think through scenarios to ensure there are no blind spots we could be overlooking.
Let me give you an example...
You are all at the age where dating becomes common language.
Some of you got an earlier start… We won’t unpack that, but all I have to say is… I bet it was a failure.
Let me offer some advice for you to consider when approaching the idea of dating.
This is to be applied maybe now… but potentially later!
Choose the right location for the first date.
No pressure no problem. The point of this date is to get to know each other. Look for a low pressure environment, one that doesn’t demand expectations with what to wear, you are locked into a time frame, and it isn’t set up for awkward moments.
2. Prepare for engaging conversation.
Studies show that women enjoy dates who are curious, intelligent, and cultured. Leave the pick-up lines and empty compliments at the house, fellas.
3. Body language is everything.
Help them see you’re interested.
4. Know that the perfect match doesn’t require perfect compatibility.
You can share different interest and appreciate the uniqueness of that person!
If we were to heavily consider these things before engaging in a date night, it would potential change what could’ve been a different experience!
Considerations and advice are powerful. They might save you form something you didn’t even know you needed saving from!
You can’t be all things to all people!
You haven’t done everything if you haven’t asked for help!
Life’s good but it is not fair.
All of these things can help bring insight that aid in our experiences in life but there is a problem...
They do not give answers to reasons!
Why can’t I be all things to all people?
Why do I need help?
Why is life not fair?
This evening, I want to for all of us to consider something some of us have confronted before, but all of us could benefit from...

Passage

1 John 3:1–7 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
*Pray
The apostle John wrote this letter for those who needed assurance about their life.
I want to propose these two questions, the beginning of a few things we will consider tonight.
Are you confident in what happens after death on this earth?
Are you confident in who you are as an individual, that you are or shifting towards who you feel you should be?
When we consider these questions, it only brings up more...
What is beyond this life?
Why am I not who I should be? Why do I struggle to be what I want to be?
Let’s consider verse 4.
1 John 3:4 ESV
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
What is sin?
Sin is what separates us from God. It is our intention of doing anything that was against what God had for us… And what God had for us was what was best for us!
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
This sin bares a consequence and that is how death entered the world, when humanity began to do things their own way.
We now have a future eternally separated from God- forever.
God is perfect and holy, filled with love but intolerant of anything that is wrong and imperfect.
Therefore, when we sin, we are separated from God.
The worst part about this is that there is nothing we can do to remove this stain of sin...
This is so contrary to what we are continuously taught.
We can’t work our way to avoid death.
There is nothing we can accomplish that would allow us to be exempt from death and this separation from our creator, one who want to us to experience what we were created to experience!
A life free of struggle, pain, confusion, and frustration!
So how are we able to be saved from this sin?
For those in the room who have come to this recognition and have experienced this life change, will you remember and consider this with me tonight?
1 John 3:1 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
John is pointing our eyes back to the love of God that has been extended to us- making us children of God again...
What is important about this love?
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Because of God’s love, He decided to offer you grace...
“Don’t worry about it”
“That sin in your life, I will take care of it.”
“You have been searching and you will never find what you’re looking for, and even though you don’t deserve the life you wish to live, I will give it to you anyways.”
“I will give grace.”
IF grace is the means of our moment to escape death and sin, then how does this work? If I don’t die, what happens to the punishment of death I was supposed to receive?
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
God sent His son, Jesus, to die in our place. Something had to die...
God’s love for us in this room was so great, He wanted to win us back so badly, that He sent His son to suffer in pur place so that we might be exempt from the experience of that death.
This is why John shifts our eyes to His love in 1 John 3
1 John 3:1 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
See what kind of love!
Other versions say “behold!”
He wants us to notice the amount of love God has for you!
So much that he offered His own Son as a sacrifice!
Secondly, he wants you to notice the manner in which His love is extended!
The story goes as such, He willingly let himself be killed in our place, promising that He would rise from the dead on the third day...
And that, He did. What is amazing about this is that because He defeated death, so can we!
1 John 3:3 ESV
3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Eternal life, and the forgiveness of your sin is all a free gift.
You can have assurance that when you die, you actually gain life, one that is eternal in the presence of God, free from the hardship of this world.
There is HOPE!
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 John 3:5 ESV
5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
1 John 3:7 ESV
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
This is where you find life, purpose, identity, and assurance.
So how do you accept this free gift?
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

The Struggle/Invitation

Some of you came tonight confident in your walk with Jesus. You have experienced this salvation.
What have you recently not been surrendering. Where do you lack in trust and faith? What have you been struggling to be obedient to?
Others of you are very familiar with this truth. You are familiar with the need for Jesus.
But you have never actually surrendered your life to this truth by professing Him as savior.
This profession demands a response.
If someone saved your life, their is a feeling to owe a debt, one driven by loyalty and love.
But maybe you have been extending that loyalty and love to something else...
A relationship, a sport, an identity, or maybe even yourself...
Your eternal life is not secured by what is gained or attained based on the measurement of acceptance or success of this world.
It is secured in the profession and life dedicated to understanding who you are in Christ.
This is the perfect time to start off on the right path. Maybe tonight, you need to redirect your life and surrender it all to Christ.
Then there are some of you who have never heard this truth laid out like this. That you can do nothing.
That life can be filled with joy and hope.
That you can know exactly why life is the way it is and how God can offer you something better than this world- eternal life free of the struggle.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
is all it takes.
This morning I read a passage out of Hebrews
Hebrews 3:1 ESV
1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,
Let’s consider Jesus tonight.
