Many people profess belief in Jesus and identify themselves as a Christian (follower of Christ). However, have you ever thought, what would Jesus say or think about your belief? The message today is about spiritual self-examination to know whether or not you are in the faith or just one of the many who profess belief in Jesus but are walking through the wide gate and the broad road that leads to destruction.

Introduction

What does God think about this?

John 2:23–25 NIV

Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.

Believed by seeing signs—v. 23 (signs are evidences; belief predicated on truth)

Jesus would not entrust himself to them—v. 24 (did not believe in their belief, but why? . . .)

Because Jesus knows what is in each person—v. 25

What must we do?

Acknowledge Jesus is LORD (Romans 10:8-10)

If you acknowledge Jesus is LORD, then a daily self-examination is in order (2 Co 13:5-8; James 1:22-25)

You are created in Christ to do the good works of God (Eph 2:8-10; 2 Tim 3:16-17)

Practice what He preached (James 2:14-26; 1 John 3:4-10; Matthew 7:24-27)

Conclusion

The person who professes belief in Jesus and identify as a Christian is truly one, when he or she, based upon the saving work of God, acknowledges His lordship over their lives by examining themselves, daily, in accordance with his words and practicing what He says. That is the person Jesus entrust Himself too.
