A brief presentation of the problems of church in Corinth (divison, problems during their church service, problems with the gifts of the holy spirit, problems in the marriages, problems with sexual sin etc).
Definition of the word holy - to set apart (to be morally separated or morally different than this world)
Leviticus 20:26
You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.
I. The persons called to holiness (v. 2)
a) Explanation
-those who claim to be part of the church of Christ
-those who claim Jesus christ as their Lord
b)Illustration
You are like a solider who has been enlisted. You are not anymore a mere citizen of this world. But a solider with a special calling. You have received a status that separates you from the rest of the population and who makes you obligated to live a certain way.
c)application
-do you feel responsible, do you feel obligated by christ to be morally different?
-If I live with you 10 days, would I get the feeling that you talk, dress and act towards your wife and kids and towards society differently than the people from the world do?
II. The provider of holiness (v.2a)
a) explanation
-Christ (not you)
-in Him you get this holiness and power to live a holy life
1 Corinthians 1:30
And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption
b) illustration
Christ embodies the CEO Father who wants you to get somewhere. And In order to get there he gives you his car and credit card to do so. Therefore, he is the provider of the fuel and of the vehicle, not you. You are called to use all that your father has to accomplish
c) application
-humble (his holiness, not yours)
2 Timothy 1:9
God is the who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.
-joyful and dependent
-commited (allow Christ to live his holiness through you)
Ephesians 4:1
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called
III. The procedures to this holiness (v.5-7)
a) explanation
-the church and the people’s gifts
-what gifts?
Romans 12:4-8 (6 gifts)
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
-prophecy
-service
-teaching
-exhortation / encouragement
-generosity
-mercy (compassionate ear)
b) illustration
When you drive the car that daddy gave you long enough, you need someone to show you the way or a GPS (and that is the teacher and the prophet). You need oil, you need a spare tire, you need a lot of stuff.
c) application
-do you exercise your gift or someone else’s gift?
-find your gift
-are you lazy and consumerist?
-are you allowing other people to use their gifts in your life
IV. The purpose of holiness (v.8)
a) explanation
-to meet Jesus Christ
b) Illustration
To meet with daddy
c)Application
do you long to for that day? or are you lost with the things of the world?
