Introduction

John 13:1–4 NASB95
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
Jesus is knowing that the hour had come.
The hour when God is going to glorify Jesus, Jesus would glorify God, through His death in the cross was coming .
Also to time of His betrayal
He would be returning to the Father, back to the union that always was.
But Jesus did what He was suppose to do. He loved, He saved, and Jesus didn’t just do this for His believers at that time. But all time.

v.2

during this time the devil had entered in to Judas.
Judas’ heart was moved by the devil.
So as Judas is eating with Jesus, His plan was already set.

v. 3-4

Jesus, coming from the Father.
He is given all things in His hand. He had did compete control. He was victorious in His earthly work.
With just one things left to do.
Jesus had the power and victory.
Jesus loved them.

What did He do with it?

He took off His clothes and grabbed a towel and tied Himself with It.

v.5

John 13:5 NASB95
5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

The washing of the feet.

When Jesus (Old Testament) came to Abraham to
Genesis 18:4–5 NASB95
4 “Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree; 5 and I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.”
Jesus poured water and wished (cleaned) the feet of His Disciples
washing of the feet is an act of love. An act of service.
Jesus shows Himself in the way of a servant.
See that He got up, from reclining to present Himself as a servant
We see the humbled nature of Jesus.
Jesus humbled Himself to wash the feet of His disciples
Timing
But lets look at the timing of all this.
lets look at two things.
Jesus is repeating an action that Mary did in John 12:3
John 12:3 NASB95
3 Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
This is an act of service that Jesus is doing.
Jesus shows the role of a servant.
removing his outer clothes, showing His humility.

In the banquets

The master would remain reclined, while the servant got up to serve.
Look what Jesus did.
2. This is taking place at the same time that Judas has made up his mind to betray Jesus.
John 13:6–7 NASB95
6 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.”
Peter can see what Jesus is doing.
This act of service.
He ask if Jesus was going to wash His feet.
He says that Peter does not understand this act now, but will.

Protest

v.8

John 13:8 NASB95
8 Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
Peter’s pride.
he saw Jesus as belittling Himself to wash his feet, we see protest.

Time out: Lets look at Peter....

this is not the first time that Peter protest
this time its about Jesus washing his feet.
Lets not forget when Peter protested Jesus death:
Matthew 16:22–23 NASB95
22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Peter is a person that where His heart of his selves
He is the type of person who’s heart is in the right place, but talks before he thinks.
Jesus tells him that he does not understand, but soon will.

What does he not understand, but soon will?

Jesus says that they will not understand.
The fact is, none of the disciples understood this,
They didn't understand why Jesus was going to the cross.
But they will.
There human failures will be turned into victory for Christ. (Peter’s denial and restoration)
This indicates that the washing symbolizes allowing Jesus to serve his followers by embracing his death for them.
Jesus says that if He doesn’t do this he can have no part of Him
That is always true: unless the Lamb of God has taken away a person’s sin, has washed that person, he or she can have no part with Him

Washing feet.

in those times in the Middle East, people washed ones’s feet to enter into a house
The priest would wash their hands and feet before entering into the sanctuary
Exodus 30:19–21 NAS
19“Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet from it; 20when they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, so that they will not die; or when they approach the altar to minister, by offering up in smoke a fire sacrifice to the Lord. 21“So they shall wash their hands and their feet, so that they will not die; and it shall be a perpetual statute for them, for Aaron and his descendants throughout their generations.”
When Jesus was washing the feet of the disciples they were being approved to Enter into the rest of our Lord.

v.9

John 13:9 NASB95
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”
Peter tells Jesus to not just wash his feet, but has head and hands.
Peter says “give me a shower!”
Peter shows his heart.
It is clear he was willing to do anything to show Jesus that he didn't want to be disconnected from Him.
are we doing this?

v. 10-11

John 13:10–11 NASB95
10 Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
What does this mean?
Jesus talks in double meaning,
washing feet
cleansing of sin
When you accept Jesus as Lord and savior. you are clean,
with washing one’s feet, its like cleaning parts of your life dirty areas,
1 John 1:9 NASB95
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
But it does not mean that you need to have salvation again.
Because of Jesus’ work we are saved once. no need to be saved again.
His disciples (but one) are saved.
Judas would betray Him.

v.12-15

John 13:12–15 NASB95
12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 “You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
Jesus says here that just ask he did this to them, they should do the same for others.
The same actions, humility and love.
Jesus is the prototype.
Jesus making it clear that He is the example.

v. 16-17

John 13:16–17 NASB95
16 “Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 “If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
Jesus shares here that His disciples are not greater than Him.
So His example should be followed.
knowing this, knowing Jesus example and living it, we will do well.

v. 18-20

John 13:18–20 NASB95
18 “I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 “From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He. 20 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
Jesus makes it clear that one of His disciple will turn his back on Him
Jesus was not surprised about Judas betraying Him remember, all things were given to His hands (v.3)
v. 20
Jesus talk of those who would witness for Him later
