Introduction

We have a new Family
Children of God
John 1:12 (ESV)
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Romans 8:16–17 (ESV)
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Speak to each other with brotherly terms.
adelphos brother- a close associate of a group of persons having a well-defined membership (in the NT ἀδελφόςb refers specifically to fellow believers in Christ)—‘fellow believer, (Christian) brother.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 124. Print.)
Textual Context
Paul wrote 1 and 2 Corinthians dealing with misunderstanding doctrinally and relational issues in the church at Corinth. His goal in writing these letters is to correct the doctrinal errors and seek unity between Him and the church as well as within the church. In 2 Corinthians, Paul is addressing the issue of false teachers coming into the church discrediting His ministry.
2 cor 13 - is Paul's final Warnings and Benediction.
2 Cor 13:11 - Paul writes about 4 items that are good reminders and attitudes for Christians living in relationships.
2 Corinthians 13:11 (ESV)
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Rejoice (13:11a).

2 Corinthians 13:11 (ESV)
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Rejoice
Rejoice - to enjoy a state of happiness and well-being—‘to rejoice, to be glad.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 302. Print.)
Rejoice in being a part of the family of God
Romans 5:11 (ESV)
11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Reconciliation - to reestablish proper friendly interpersonal relations after these have been disrupted or broken. (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 501. Print.)
Rejoice because we are in right relationship with God and a part of His Kingdom.
Rejoice with each other
Romans 12:15 (ESV)
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.
Being a part of the people of God, we are in close relationship with each other and will share in the ups and downs of life.
Being a part of the church is not about being in the same building because we have the same beliefs, but we are a part of the family of God living in relationship with each other.

Seek Unity and Restoration (13:11b).

2 Corinthians 13:11 (ESV)
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Aim for Restoration
Restoration - ① to cause to be in a condition to function well, put in order, restore. ⓐ restore to a former condition, put to rights” (Arndt, William, Frederick W. Danker, et al. A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature 2000: 526. Print.)
Relating well in our relationships with each other. Restore to good relationship is problems arise.
Many if not all of us have had situations in our relationship with others had something happen that caused issues in the relationship. Even if there was forgiveness, the relationship was not the same. Sometimes we will just leave the relationship or church. The relationship is never restored. Conflict resolution is not easy, but God is wanting restored relationships.
Restoration with Paul and each other
Paul
Paul wrote this letter with the goal of dealing with the false teachers and restoring his relationship with the church.
Paul has written up to 3 letters to the church in Corinth with numerous visits with the goal of restoration.
Each other within the church.
1 Corinthians 1:10–12 (ESV)
10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”
Active division in the church based on commitment to teachers/leaders.
Agree and Unite (vs 10)
When we think about the church do we see it as a group of people in close relationship with one another or a place of worship with people of like beliefs?
Live in unity
Eager to maintain unity
Ephesians 4:1–3 (ESV)
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Eager - to do something with intense effort and motivation—‘to work hard, to do one’s best, to endeavor.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 661. Print.)
Maintain - ② to cause a state, condition, or activity to continue, keep, hold, reserve, preserve someone or something ⓒ of holding on to something so as not to give it up or lose it. (Arndt, William, Frederick W. Danker, et al. A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature 2000: 1002. Print.)
Unity - a state of oneness or of being in harmony and accord, unity (Arndt, William, Frederick W. Danker, et al. A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature 2000: 338. Print.)
Jesus’ prayer for unity John 17.
Forgiving one another
Forgiveness and restoration is one of the best witness of the love and forgiveness of God and the power of the Gospel.
Forgive one another
Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)
32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Forgiveness - to forgive, on the basis of one’s gracious attitude toward an individual—‘to forgive.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 502. Print.)
Forgiveness is a choice you make, not a feeling you have. Sometimes you are working hard to forgive and restore the relationship, but the other person is not. Then what?
Overlook an offense
Do your part - Rom 12:18If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
You do your part in forgiving or asking for forgiveness. Deal with the feeling in your own heart and life. Seek God for healing where needed. Seek restoration of relationship.
Proverbs 19:11 (ESV)
11 Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
Overlook - pull along; go on one’s way, move through; pass over, pass by; overstep, contravene (554×)(The Lexham Analytical Lexicon of the Hebrew Bible 2017: n. pag. Print.)
Offense - evildoing n., the violation of a law or a duty or moral principle (The Lexham Analytical Lexicon of the Hebrew Bible 2017: n. pag. Print.)
If you can just overlook the offence and continue in the relationship as before that is great.
Goal is Restoration
Matthew 5:23–24 (ESV)
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Reconciled - to be restored to normal relations or harmony w. someone, become reconciled τινί to someone (Arndt, William, Frederick W. Danker, et al. A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature 2000: 232. Print.)
Our reconciliation with others is very important to God.

Comfort and Encourage each other (13:11c).

2 Corinthians 13:11 (ESV)
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Comfort one another
Comfort - to cause someone to be encouraged or consoled, either by verbal or non-verbal means—‘to encourage, to console, encouragement.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 305. Print.)
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (ESV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
As we experience the comfort of God in our lives, we can comfort others in our lives.
Part of being in relationship with others in the church is to receive and give comfort in times of difficulty.
Encourage one another
Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV)
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Stir up - markers of a causative relation, with the implication of stimulating a change in motivation or attitude—‘to cause, encouragement.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 804. Print.)
Encouraging - same word and context idea as 2 cor 12:13. (Console and encourage)

Live in harmony and peace (13:11d).

2 Corinthians 13:11 (ESV)
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Live in Peace
to be at peace ⓑ keep the peace” (Arndt, William, Frederick W. Danker, et al. A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature 2000: 287. Print.)
Romans 12:16–18 (ESV)
16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Harmony - (derivative of the base φρον‘thoughtful planning,’ 26.15) to employ one’s faculty for thoughtful planning, with emphasis upon the underlying disposition or attitude—‘to have an attitude, to think in a particular manner. (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 324. Print.)
opposite of “do not be haughty” - Think rightly about people and live with them in harmony.
Seek to live at peace - “as much as it depends on you” (18)
Romans 14:17–19 (ESV)
17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
Kingdom of God is about righteousness, peace, and Joy in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit living in and with the believer and the church brings the fruit of the Spirit Gal 5:22-23
Galatians 5:22–23 (ESV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Pursue peace and upbuilding
Pursue - to do something with intense effort and with definite purpose or goal—‘to do with effort, to strive toward. (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 662. Print.)
Upbuilding - to increase the potential of someone or something, with focus upon the process involved—‘to strengthen, to make more able, to build up.’ (Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains 1996: 675. Print.)

Application (Attitudes to adopt)

Seek to adopt the attitudes Paul is talking about in our relationships with others
Rejoice
Aim to Restore relationships with issues - Is there a relationship that is not restored?
Comfort one another - Do we have relationships in your life that we are and/or being encouraging?
Live at peace - are we pursuing what leads to peace and upbuilding of others?
We are a part of a family in Christ and there is a great level of encouragement and opportunity to show grace to each other.
