Introduction

My way of looking at the spiritual gifts is a bit different than others have done so in the past. It was a way I learned from Chip Ingram and I have know Idea where he learned it from. But It is the way that makes the most since to me.
I have seen and even taken hundreds of spiritual gift test. Some are good and some are not good. Some have only gifts found in the Bible some list all kinds of crazy things. Some say that all of them are in you, which always seemed to go against what Paul was teaching, and some say you only have them if you can speak in tongues first or even know the secret password.
The way that makes the most since to me is from 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
1 Corinthians 12:4–6 CSB
Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person.
Different gifts (charismata)
Different ministries (Diakonion)
Different Activities/manifestations (energamaton)
Gifts flows into ministries which shows itself in different activities.
This makes more since to me because we have a root gift(s) that influences how we serve and how it manifest in the church. The wonderful thing about his is no matter where you find yourself in the journey of life there is a way the gift of the spirit can manifest itself.
Every believer has one primary motivational gift. and we are to develop and grow this motivational gift. There is no arguing with each other about which is better we are to build each other up.
Where Paul uses this word gift or Charismata is in Romans chapter 12:6
Romans 12:3–8 CSB
For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one. Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts: If prophecy, use it according to the proportion of one’s faith; if service, use it in service; if teaching, in teaching; if exhorting, in exhortation; giving, with generosity; leading, with diligence; showing mercy, with cheerfulness.
Today we are going to talk about prophecy. Through the lens mentioned before. Prophecy as a motivational gift.

Office of Prophecy

Prophets are all all over the scriptures. They varied from people preaching in the streets and walking around naked to make a point, to court officials that helped guide the king. The prophets in the scriptures, like we see Elijah and Isaiah being, were men that could call out the king on things and hopefully get them to see the truth of the scriptures. Often unsuccessfully. But they served the same roles as sacred clowns in Hopi, Zuni religion or court jesters. They were people that pointed out flaws in society. They had an official position. Some of these prophets in the scriptures get paid by the court and become yes men. What ever the king wanted of course that was what God was saying.
God also called people to be prophet and hold the role of prophet. Jesus, David (limited) Solomon, Jeremiah, Hosea, Micah .....
We are not talking about the office of prophet here

Gift of Prophecy

Like evangelism we all can prophesy
1 Corinthians 14:31 “For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged.”
But that doesn’t mean that you have the gift of prophecy. What’s the difference. look at something you might be more familiar with. Basketball. Everyone in this room can play basketball. Doesn’t mean you have a gift for it and defiantly wont hold the office of basketball player.
Go back to Romans 12:6 “According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts: If prophecy, use it according to the proportion of one’s faith;”
If someone has a gift of prophecy let him that means though we are all able and even commanded to do all the gifts in Romans 12 doesn’t mean that your primary motivational gift is all the same. We all are called to serve but doesn’t mean that all of our time will be focused on service if our gift isn’t service. if you understand you have one primary motivational gift that will be shown or manifested in different ministries it will change your life.
What is the gift of Prophecy?
Prophecy is the divine enablement to proclaim God’s truth with power and clarity in a timely and culturally sensitive fashion for correction, repentance, or edification. Ability to reveal God’s word. -Chip Ingram
What does that mean?
Someone with the gift of Prophecy doesn’t mean that they are a fortune teller. Someone with the gift of prophecy is someone who sees or knows Gods truth from His word and can apply it to the time that we live in. Someone who has a call to see lives change.
People with this gift often intuitively ask “what went wrong? What caused this?”
Someone who desires to proclaim God’s word to change lives. See where we are headed culturally, see what God’s word says and see what needs to happen. There doesn’t have to be new information but they speak to the real issues that happens
Desire to correct someone’s life

How does Prophecy Manifest?

Prophecy leads to service or shows itself in different ways. May be in the prophet role, or pastor/teach or evangelism, or administration, or tongues (not the random noise kind the language kind)
often we confuse our ministry and manifestations for our motivation. This works well for awhile but will lead you feeling empty.
Characteristics of someone with this gift:
Persuasive speaker
Read people
Black and white kind of people. Not racial. Opinionated this is the truth. boom (can sometimes come off rude especially one on one).
Tend to like big crowed not one on one

Is this you?

No that is OK. As where everyone can prophecy that may not be your gift
Maybe it is think about it.
What is your gift?
Next week
Pray for those who can prophecy. Let us hear them and pray for them
