Asked my buddy what the best thing about living in Switzerland was, he said the flag is a big plus!
I cant believe they fired me from the Calendar factory, all I did was take a day off.
today, I would say that Jesus is going to be offending both sides of the argument...
John 5:8–9 ESV
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
This was the problem… the Sabbath.. Genesis 1… rests 7th day.. not because he is tired but to setup a rhythm for us
Do you have a sabbath for you… Israel… no button elevator friday night to saturday night… I want you to rest… have you met people in life where people have never practiced this… workaholism is praised… and some point they fall apart… and the soul needs rest… and if you dont rest you will burn out… it may take longer… Carey Nieuwhoff… Didn’t see it coming… just woke up one morning to and it was over… had to go through counseling and get forced rest… and God is telling us he needs us to rest and just look at the world around us… and look I am awful… I get itchy.. my adhd wants to do something…
John 5:10 ESV
10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
God gave them this idea that they were supposed to rest… Jesus heals this guy… and Jesus is saying the sabbath is this pointer to me… and Hes like on this different time and jesus is realizing they have taken this great idea and they ahve messed it up and this is the principle we have to take into… we love to work and get glorified wtih it. And when you get burnt out you make bad horrible decisions.... You are just go go go all the time…
God wants you to take the time to rest. So you can be rejuvenated and ready to go…and we can destroy these idols of work in our lives… and how many of you have come to the place in your life where you have a god given vision and it has become oppressive to you… lets walk that out… you get so obessesed that you cant see straight… the people around you are not liking you… etc
First group of people Jesus will criticize about this
Its not lawful… don’t you know what the Bible says… what God says.. you should pay attention to it… look at verse 16
John 5:16 ESV
16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
He is doing good work on the sabbath and thats what they have issues with and that is this conservative spirit… where you know the rules and we talk about this all the time… we are the people and we read our bibles and tithe and do the right things. You attend church and think God will love you becasue of it becasue you think if you do these things God will love and bless you…epastors and churches do this all the time....
You were wearing jeans so I couldnt hear a thing you were saying… I heard a man talking about Beards.... a pastor was preaching at his church and half of them got up and left because he was wearing a hat… and halfway through his sermon it became about legalism… it was strategic.... and the ones that needed to hear it were gone… you are focusing on the little things… you are straining out a gnat and swallowing the camel… you are missing the big ideas and demonizing other people… and splitting them up to the good and bad people
cursing around me and Im always like… hey man I have heard them all before… but I realize I have to minister.. biut not like Chris Newbern...
Writer.. in Bible college......and there was a pictgure of Jesus on the wall… but all the guys got in trouble if they grew their hair too long… and he was like we are missing something here… and when we miss the spirit of the rule we are missing out and becoming so conservative that we have forgot what is really going on...
We are called to be salt and light in the world… it is what Jesus wants us to do.... listen in matthew 9
Matthew 9:9–13 ESV
9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. 10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
He quotes the OT… He is saying… sacrifice… sabbath… I desire mercy not your religious rules… and God created these religious rules for your flourishing think about that the rules should have helped us to get closer to him to have this beautiful relationship… but now we are keeping out the people God wanted to get in. Look at how Paul says it
2 Corinthians 3:4–6 ESV
4 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Let me read you this quote by Phillip Yancy… opposite of legalism is what… grace… parables… so many you thought were out are in… Whats so amazing about grace...
“Compollo tells about being invited to speak in Honolulu one time and having trouble getting his body to adjust to the ten-hour shift from his home in Philadelphia. He wound up wide awake at three in the morning drinking coffee in an all-night diner. Presently the door opened and in came about eight women laughing and talking loudly. Campolo soon deduced that they were streetwalkers finished with their evenings work and relaxing before going home to sleep. One, named Agnes, mentioned to her friend that the next day would be her thirty-ninth birthday. After the group left, Campolo got a bright idea. HE said the the gruff proprietor behind the counter, ‘Did you hear that one woman say tomorrow was her birthday? Whaddya say we throw her a party we throw her a party? I’ll come back tomorrow night with some decorations, and lets surprise her with a cake and everything!’ And the mans wife came out of the kitchen and said this is a wonderful idea. Twenty-four hours later the little diner was decorated with streamers and balloons. A festive sign was taped up to the mirror. The couple had put the word out on the street, and a large assortment of night people were gathered. When the prostitutes came in for their usual coffee, the shout went up: ‘Happy Birthday, Agnes!’ The woman stood speechless as the singing began. Tears started to roll down her cheeks. Nobody had shown her genuine kindness in years. The owner brought out a birthday cake with candles. Agnes was in such shock that she had to be reminded to blow them out. She paused again. ‘Well, cut the cake, Agnes!’ the shop owner finally found words. In a whisper she said, ‘Please… I just want to keep the cake. I’ll take it to my apartment down the street… just for a couple of days. Please let me keep the cake. No one knew how to respond but no one could think of a reason to refuse her request. So out the door she fled, holding the cake as if it were the Holy Grail. An awkward silence filled the room. Campolo finally broke in with a bold suggestion: I have an idea - why don’t we pray? Without hesitation he began to pray, a voice over the crowd, for Agnes, that God would bless her on her birthday that God would bring peace into her life and save her from all that troubled her. At the amen the diner owner said Hey you didnt tell me you were a preacher, what kind of church do you preach at? Campolo thought a moment, cocked his head sideways and then answered with a grin, I preach at the kind of church that throws birthday parties for whores at three-thirty in the morning! What happened next was the most poignant moment of all. THe man squinted at Campolo and announced, no no you dont there is no church like thatI would join a church like that...
Are we a church like that, are we a people like that, are you a person like that, and I am not sure without some great teaching and mercy and grace we are people like that, becasue we want to lead with morality… in order to be a Christian you have to do this… and that… and not this…Its almost like we think we Christianity is for a safe conservative family like culture.... You know we were birthed out of Christian concepts crowd… yes its for them but Christianity is also for the crowd that doesnt think or care about that because it is a beautiful gospel that is not trying to win us to the world… but win us to Jesus…
Think about your relational circles… are you ever with people who need the grace or only the people that have it… becasue when you hang out with the people that need it it messes with your theology a little bit… you’re not supposed to heal on the sabbath. I know… but I am coming to mess with the paradigm a little bit… If I told you the lifestyle of some of the peopple that are on the fringes.. you may think they are too far out there… and the story of Grace calls that out...
CS Lewis… one concept Christianity teaches that no one else does… easy… grace… and so how are we the people that seem to miss it the most
Big thing.. Christianity is not Karma… do good things God will love you… and Jesus is about to challenge that
John 5:11–12 ESV
11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ ” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”
For a second it becomes about WHO IS JESUS that healed you… and what is really important the Bible is about Jesus first and foremost and what he has done than it is about you… it is about what you are supposed to do and how to lvie
John 5:13 ESV
13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
Did not know..remember that.. he doesnt know who actually healed him… remember last week… he gets healed doesnt even know who he is… and the question is do you recognize the good things in life come from Jesus… and we receive all of the healings the art and all of those things from Jesus the music and beauty in teh world., but we dont give credit to common grace… that the rain and sun are all from God whether we recognize it or not… amd so the question is are you just going through life and not paying attention to what God is giving you and living your day to day life like you are completely in control of it or do you realize you are not.. this story says all of the things JEsus is behind them whether you recognize it or not… and your question is are you willing to put your self in the place where youy realize Jesus is in control or not? And now we have criticized the conservatives.. and here come teh liberals....
John 5:14 ESV
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”
See you are well. Sin no more. He doesnt just let him think he is good… that his nature is good… that the enviroment is to blame… we could all work our way out of this mess… the concept of sin is just old school christianity… the bible isnt real… its just a metaphor… thats old school… sin isnt real.... and jesus says legalism is bad… and then he comes and says but there is SIN and I want you to stop it...
Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you. John Owen
So nothing worse may happen… something worse than dying… dying in your sin.. dying without forgiveness… if liberalism si right and heaven is for everyone… and revelation talks about the martyrs under the altar that will be slaughtered for their faith.. becasue the resurrection is a metaphor and hell isnt real? Come on… then why give their life… It is not all a joke… becasue there is sin… if all we need is a tiny tweak to be a better person...
WHat is the sin in your life that you are playing with… we dare not laught at sin that Jesus died for… but some of us do.... how dare we laught at things that cause the heart of god to break… it gets us off kilter with each other,, and our socia dynamics are worse when we dont let hte God of the universe handle it.. and jesus is the one who comes and does it perfect becasue we can’t//. he wants to come and free us from the present sin in our life...
John 5:15–17 ESV
15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
WHy does he say that? Becasue the question is working on the Sabbath… he calls them all out… and he says you are calling out the healing and trying to call me out… dont you know that God who you love and honor has been working… he created the wolrd… and sin entered… and he and I have been working on the redemption ever since.... and he is say don’t you realize God is a worker… he is doing things you cant see in every moment… he created and continues to create beautiful realities… and he is saying I am doing what God is doing but in the world… and some of you need to go from this vague idea of God… to this specific concept of Jesus… and the work that he did… in his perfect life and death on the cross....
