Introduction
You often hear people talk about being “on fire” for God.
But what does it really mean?
Being on fire for the Lord means to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
It’s an ongoing “revival” in our own hearts.
Revival: to revive; to wake up.
When we are on fire, we are revived from our spiritual death because we are filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Text
Matt 3:11 “11 “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God.
But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
Fire either purifies or destroys.
Refined gold
Forest fire
“Our God is a consuming fire.”
The Fire of the Holy Spirit is poured out to:
Purify us
Enlighten our eyes
Melt the blockades of our hearts away
Consume us whole
Sometimes the Fire wanes or subsides.
1 Thess 5:19 “19 Do not quench the Holy Spirit.”
“To quench” carries the idea of dampening the fire of the holy spirit.
We can quench the Holy Spirit, and Paul urges us to not!
If you could prevent the fire in your life and here at CCSM from bing quenched, wouldn’t you?
When we experience the Fire of God, when we experience genuine revival (personal and corporate) it can be cut short, when the fire of the Holy Spirit is quenched through unrealized omprimise.
Transition
So tonight, I want to look at five ways we can quench the spirit—dampen the flame—and then look at how we can fan the flame instead.
Five Ways We Quench the Sprit
When we allow excitement to dull our spiritual senses.
Sometimes we allow excitement to dull our spiritual senses.
We get excited about:
The big crowds (corporate)
The big changes (personal)
The miracles (both)
These are things worth getting excited about!
In fact, the gifts of the spirit are always worth getting excited about.
If they’re showing up, it means God is showing up!
And when God shows up, lives are changed!
Sometimes we get more excited about the people, the changes, the miracles than we are excited about the God who brought all that about.
Our spiritual senses become dulled by he excitement and we no longer hear what God is trying to tell us.
We no longer see what God is trying to show us.
We no longer feel what God is longing for us to feel.
We are created to see, touch, gear, and feel God.
The Fire of the Holy Spirit draws us near to the heart of God.
When we get more caught up in the excitement than the Source, we quench the sprit.
Pride and showmanship
Sometimes we allow pride and showmanship to distract from what God is doing.
“Look at me, I’m on fire!”
“Look at me, I’m a worshipper!”
“Look at me, I’m more spiritual than you!”
We can develop a superiority complex because of what God is doing is us, through us, and around us.
“Our church is on fire.”
“My youth group has a better worship band.”
God humbles the proud.
If the fire of God is upon us, it is not because of what we’ve done but because of what God has graciously given to us.
If pride and showmanship show up, the Fire might just leave the building.
When we neglect the study and teaching of God’s word
Sometimes we try to substitute the sheer energy of revival (both personal and corporate) by neglecting the study and teaching of the Word of God.
Man doesn’t live on bread alone, but on every word of God.
We need fresh manna, daily.
Our studying, my preaching should be logs on the fire.
If we forsake the word, we quench the Holy Sprit.
When we love the worship service or worship music more that the one being worshipped
God will not stand for idolatry
We are participating in idolatry when we begin to love the appearance of worship, the feeling of worship, or the music of worship more than the God that we worship.
No song, no band, no fellowship of believers could ever be as beautiful as the Lord.
Our misdirected love is idolatry, and it quenches the Holy Spirit.
When we try to use revival as a means of advance our own agenda, instead of the kingdom.
The great commission.
Five Ways to Fan the Flame
Listen and ask
Be humble
Get in the word
Focus your affections on Him
Take it to the world
