Sermon
Coming out of camp, this passage is totally relevant to where we are as a group.
Big idea: How we view ourself determines how we treat others
Verse 3
Is that true or false?
and why
Verse 3 is going to begin setting this up:
Lets see what verse 3 says:
read V4-8
Should we all look alike?
Is it reasonable that everyone be exactly alike?
Insecurity stems from when we fear being different more than we embrace being different.
We are saying that it is not acceptable to be different from other people.
This is because even if we are Christians, we put value in how much we fit in, not how much we are forgiven and accepted by God.
There is a direct relationship between how much you understand that A. you need forgiveness and B. you have been forgiven and how you treat others around you.
As a youth group, we struggle with verse 9-13
We may stop and take a moment to pray for forgiveness of this:
Have a student read verses 14-21
What sticks out to you from those verses?
Lets review and revisit our opening statement:
How we view ourselves determines how we treat others
A couple of scenarios:
I dont need to be forgiven, im good.
Will be arrogant, will be quick to judge other people, will be quick to hold people to a high standard without showing them grace,
Will only say there are good people and bad people.
You better not be a bad person or i will talk about you because Im not a bad person.
I dont think God will forgive me
Could possibly be hopeless so could be cold to others.
Just dont care one way or the other
Will think others deserve things more than you if they seem to be a better person than you.
Doesnt understand God’s grace, so could be less than graceful when dealing with others.
I know the bible says we all sin, but im pretty good so i probably dont need as much grace as some people i see.
Will hold people to an impossible standard because you think you have held an impossible standard
Will condemn people.
I understand I am sinful but forgiven by God.
May still have anxiety or insecurity but will show people grace because I understand i dont deserve any of this.
Will be unloving when i forget this, but God has done a work in my life and it changes how i deal with people.
I just have to keep repenting.
Lets finish up by going back to v9
Close your eyes and think about this passage.
Do you need to tell someone you are sorry?
Do you need to seek God’s forgiveness on something?
Take some time to do that or to just pray
