The Sword of the Spirit

Ephesians 6:17 NASB95
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Sword

Not the long “samuri” type sword.
Sword - short one for up and close hand-to-hand combat.
Hebrews 4:12 NASB95
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Spirit

God’s being as controlling influence, with focus on association with humans
Because of its heavenly origin and nature this Spirit is called the Holy Spirit

Word of God

Rhema = that which is said, word, saying, expression, or statement of any kind. (BDAG)
The spoken Word of God
We are to hide God’s word in our heart so that the Holy Spirit can bring those Scriptures to mind in the up close battle.
Look at the two different kinds of swords again.
This “sword of the Spirit” is not a broad sweep. - it is for up close and personal attack.

Specific Attack - Spoken

“It is Written”
Jesus Uses the Sword of the Word
It is Written
Luke 4:1-13.
Luke 4:1–8 NASB95
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ” 5 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ ”
Satan also knows the Word - But omits part
Luke 4:9–11 NASB95
9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; 10 for it is written, He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’ 11 and, On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ”
Satan’s reference
Psalm 91:11–12 NASB95
11 For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. 12 They will bear you up in their hands, That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
Jesus response again
Luke 4:12–13 NASB95
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” 13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus is the Word - Putting on Jesus

John 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Prayer

Ephesians 6:18 NASB95
18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
Any battle needs communication with the commander
Our communication with God

Prayer

Philippians 4:6 NASB95
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

All Prayer

General / Specific
Intercession
Petitions
Thanksgiving

All Times

Can we really pray all the time and still live?
In a state of communication with God.

All In the Spirit - Putting on Jesus

Romans 8:26–27 NASB95
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

The Alert

Ephesians 6:18 NASB95
18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

Be Watchful

Mark 14:38 NASB95
38 “Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Be Mindful

We need to know when we are more subjective to attacks
We need to know when we are weak and vulnerable.

Be Ready
