Chapter 1
A Believers Responsibility
INTRODUCTION:
1. SPEAK SOUND DOCTRINE
Titus 2:1 says "*But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.*"
What does it mean when we say sound doctrine.
I’m not sure about this church, but in many places where I have been, if the word doctrine is mentioned, people squeal.
They say “We don’t need doctrine!
Just teach the Bible.”
But my friends, doctrine is important ad the Bible is filled with doctrine.
Doctrine is simply defined as “something that is taught or a principle or position or the body of principles in a branch of knowledge or system of belief."
Doctrine is not some weird heavy theological talk from theologians in ivory towers.
Doctrine is the very system of beliefs from which we can understand the salvation offered to us by God.
The word doctrine or doctrines is used 14 times in the new testament.
But what does Paul mean when he refers to sound doctrine?
Sound doctrine simply means healthy doctrine.
The idea of teaching sound doctrine is common in the pastoral letters that Paul wrote. 1 Timothy 1:10 says “*and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching.*" 2 Tim 1:13 says “*Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.*"
Titus 1:9 says “"* holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict."*
Why would Paul’s emphasis be so much on sound doctrine.
Earlier in the letter of Titus, Paul was talking about rebellious men.
He says in verses 10 - 12: “*For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11. who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.
12.
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.*”
Paul is contrasting right doctrine and living with the false doctrines being taught in the church in Titus earlier in the passage.
The task that Paul was assigning to Titus and secondarily to all servants of God, was to teach what was right for sound doctrine.
Many times, we believers are guilty of a great gulf between our words and our actions.
We say one thing but we do another.
We say we want to live godly lives but our actions tell the world that we are not different than they are.
I’m not sure what that statics are in Ecuador, but in the United States, the rate of teen pregnancy in the church is higher then outside the church.
The rate of divorce is higher.
The rate of immorality and use of pornography is higher in the church.
My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
Our lives should reflect our beliefs and our beliefs should reflect our doctrine and our doctrine must be sound or we as believers will not have not impact on our town, our providence or our nation.
It is time my friends that we study sound doctrine.
this verse is the keynote for the book Titus.
It is the practical out living of healthy doctrine through good works.
But the idea of healthy doctrine is also one of healthy thinking.
Our thoughts affect our very being.
Scientist have discovered that the way the mind stores memories is the same whether the event being recorded was real or imaginary.
Paul says in Colossians 3:2 "*2.
Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.*"
Romans 12:2 says “"*2.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.*"
If we are allowing God’s healthy teaching to renew our minds, we will reflect God’s glory to a dying world.
The Bible is a book that teaches us how to live.
How can we as believers say we believe this book but yet ignore the truths that govern our lives.
Sometimes, what God teaches us does not make us comfortable, but it is what we need to hear in order to live how God expects us to live.
It’s very easy to stray from the truth.
It is not a new phenomena but has occurred throughout the centuries of the church.
James Orr who wrote over 100 years ago said “Everyone must be aware that there is at the present time a great prejudice against clear and systematic thinking about divine things.
Men prefer, one cannot help seeing, to live in a region of haze and indefiniteness in regard to these matters.
They want their thinking to be fluid and indefinite - something that can be changed with the times, and with the new lights which they think are being constantly brought to bear upon it, continually taking on new forms and leaving the old behind.”
