IT'S HAPPENING! AWESOME, RIGHT? RIGHT?? BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR!
Exodus 12:33 ESV
33 The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all be dead.”
“WERE URGENT” IS THE SAME WORD USED FOR “HARDENED” OF PHARAOH’S HEART IN EXODUS 9:12,35;10:20,27;11:10. “SENT OUT” IS THE SAME VERB OF WHAT GOD DEMANDED OF PHAROAH (EX. EXODUS 5:1 SEND MY PEOPLE OUT….)
Exodus 10:20 ESV
20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go.
HERE WE GET BOTH!
Exodus 12:33 ESV
33 The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all be dead.”
“WE SHALL ALL BE DEAD”= This is ironic, for no people prepared more fully for death than the ancient Egyptians.
But death at the hands of a strange God was fearful; what preparation could be made?
PHAROAH CAN'T HELP. THE GOD'S CAN'T HELP.
Exodus 12:34–36 ESV
34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls being bound up in their cloaks on their shoulders. 35 The people of Israel had also done as Moses told them, for they had asked the Egyptians for silver and gold jewelry and for clothing. 36 And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.
PLUNDERED = SPOILS OF WAR. ISRAEL IS THE HOST OF YHWH = ARMY OF YHWH
Exodus 7:4 ESV
4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment.
MAJOR THEME OF ISRAEL AS ARMY/ARMIES OF YHWH
Exodus 12:37 ESV
37 And the people of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children.
“MEN ON FOOT”= FOOTSOLDIERS
THOUSAND = ʾelephs = CLANS = MODERN PLATOONS OR SQUADS
PROBABLY NOT LARGER THAN 15-20. IF AVERAGED AT 12 = 7200 FIGHTING MEN WITH A TOTAL POPULATION OF 28,800-36,000 RATHER THAN THE 2 MILLION PLUS.
Exodus 12:38 ESV
38 A mixed multitude also went up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds.
MIXED MULTITUDE = ETHNICALLY DIVERSE
VERY MUCH LIVESTOCK = A HEAVY FLOCK = kābēd
Exodus 12:39–41 ESV
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, for it was not leavened, because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves. 40 The time that the people of Israel lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41 At the end of 430 years, on that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.
ON THAT VERY DAY = THE DAY AFTER THE NIGHT OF PASSOVER = FOR THE HEBREWS THE DAY BEGAN AT SUNSET. FOR US = THE NEXT DAY.
Genesis 15:13–14 ESV
13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. 14 But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
BOTH NUMBERS ARE USED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT. IN ACTS 7 STEPHEN REFERRING TO THE ABRAHAM EVENT USES 400. PAUL IN GALATIANS 3:17 USES 430 IN REFERENCE TO THE GIVING OF THE COVENANT.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH THIS TEXT?
ISRAEL IS CALLED BY YHWH IN THE UNKNOWN. THEY ARE TO TRUST HIM, DEPEND ON HIM, FOLLOW HIM!
THIS IS HOW IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AND HOW IT ALWAYS WILL BE!
Genesis 12:1–3 ESV
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
ABRAM IS CALLED TO FAITH. HE BELIEVED GOD AND IT WAS CONSIDERED RIGHTEOUSNESS...
THINK ABOUT THE DISCIPLES AFTER THE RESURRECTION...
Acts 1:6–8 ESV
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
NOT FOR YOU TO KNOW...
2 Corinthians 4:16–5:7 ESV
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
LOOK TO JESUS:
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
