Following Jesus: The Letter to the Hebrews / Worship /
Hebrews 13:8–16
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
9 So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them.
10 We have an altar from which the priests in the Tabernacle have no right to eat.
11 Under the old system, the high priest brought the blood of animals into the Holy Place as a sacrifice for sin, and the bodies of the animals were burned outside the camp.
12 So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood.
13 So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore.
14 For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
15 Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.
16 And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.

1. Jesus Christ is the same (αὐτός = pertaining to that which is identical to something—‘same.’) past (ἐχθὲς ) present (σήμερον) and future (αἰῶνας).

1. What does this mean?
a. Real worship is spiritual, not ceremonial.

1- We are not to get “sucked-in” by new doctrines and ideas.
(παραφέρεσθε = ‘to carry along,’ to cause someone to depart from an earlier belief, with the implication of accepting a belief which is false—‘to mislead, to lead astray, to carry off.)

1 Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.
a. Illustration:
Following the Great Awakenings and revivals in America, many people were deceived by “restoration” groups like the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons. They were preaching “new doctrines” that contradicted the biblical doctrines about Christ, Salvation and the Church. They introduced new authorities that taught false gospels based upon works.

(pπεριπατοῦντες = to live or behave in a customary manner, with possible focus upon continuity of action—‘to live, to behave, to go about doing.’)
1- Doctrine (what we believe) affects our behavior.
a. False doctrine will influence your life in negative ways.
(1) Joseph Smith’s teaching about plural marriage led to inevitable abuses and life-styles that contradicts scripture.
b. True doctrine leads to godly behavior.
* True orthodoxy should lead to orthipraxy!
C. Reject doctrine that is unprofitable.

1. It has not even benefited those who have been occupied with it.
2. God takes doctrine seriously.
(Galatians 1:6-8)
6 I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News
7 but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.
8 Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you.

12 διὸ καὶ Ἰησοῦς, ἵνα ἁγιάσῃ διὰ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος τὸν λαόν, ἔξω τῆς πύλης ἔπαθεν.

1. Being willing to “bear the disgrace” of Christ through open identification with Him.

24 It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.
25 He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.
26 He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

15 διʼ αὐτοῦ οὖν ἀναφέρωμεν θυσίαν αἰνέσεως διὰ παντὸς τῷ θεῷ, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν καρπὸν χειλέων ὁμολογούντων τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ.
1. We are to continually (διὰ παντὸς = constantly, always, continually) offer the sacrifice of praise (καρπὸν = praises, which are presented to God as a thank offering).
(Colossians 3:15)
15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

16 τῆς δὲ εὐποιΐας καὶ κοινωνίας μὴ ἐπιλανθάνεσθε, τοιαύταις γὰρ θυσίαις εὐαρεστεῖται ὁ θεός.
(Galatians 6:10).
10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
1. Minister by doing good for one another. (εὐποιΐας =to do that which is good and beneficial to someone—‘to do good, good deed.’
2. Minister by sharing with one another. (κοινωνίας =an association involving close mutual relations and involvement—‘close association, fellowship.’)
3. These sacrifices please God. (εὐαρεστεῖται = ‘to cause to be pleased, to please.’
CONCLUSION:
