Premise: To fear God and love wisdom.
Opening:
Good-morning Connection Church, I am so glad that you have come out to worship with us this morning. It is a wonderful thing to worship God on the Lord’s Day.
Introduction of the Text:
Reading of the Text:
Proverbs 1.
The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and discipline,
To understand the sayings of understanding,
3 To receive discipline that leads to insight,
Righteousness, justice, and equity,
4 To give prudence to the simple,
To the youth knowledge and discretion;
5 Let the wise man hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire guidance,
6 To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their riddles.
7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge;
Ignorant fools despise wisdom and discipline.
8 Hear, my son, your father’s discipline
And do not abandon your mother’s instruction;
9 For they are a garland of grace for your head
And ornaments about your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not be willing.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait for blood,
Let us ambush the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
And whole, as those who go down to the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot with us,
We shall all have one purse,”
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them.
Withhold your feet from their pathway,
16 For their feet run to evil
And they hasten to shed blood.
17 For it is no use that a net is spread
In the sight of any bird;
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.
19 So are the paths of everyone who is greedy for gain;
It takes away the life of its possessors.
20 Wisdom shouts in the street,
She gives forth her voice in the square;
21 At the head of the noisy streets she calls out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love simplicity?
And scoffers delight in scoffing
And fools hate knowledge?
23 Turn to my reproof,
Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 Because I called and you refused,
I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
25 And you neglected all my counsel
And were not willing to accept my reproof;
26 I will also laugh at your disaster;
I will mock when your dread comes,
27 When your dread comes like a storm
And your disaster comes like a whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me earnestly but they will not find me,
29 Because they hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of Yahweh.
30 They were not willing to accept my counsel,
They spurned all my reproof.
31 So they shall eat of the fruit of their way
And be satisfied with their own devices.
32 For the turning away of the simple will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 But he who listens to me shall dwell securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil.”
Behold, the Word of God. Let’s Pray.

Transition:

The Purpose of Proverbs. (1-6)

Explanation:

To Know Wisdom and Instruction.

To Discern the Sayings of Understanding.

To Receive Instruction in...

Wise Behavior.

Righteousness.

Justice.

Equity.

To Give Prudence to the Naive.

To Give the Youth Knowledge and Discretion.

That a Wise Man Will Hear and Increase in Learning.

That a Man of Understanding will Acquire Wise Counsel.

To Understand a Proverb and a Figure, The Words of the Wise and Their Riddles.

Argumentation:

We Still Need These Things.

We Need Them Now More Than Ever.

We seem to lack wisdom in society in general and in the church specifically. God has given us this book. We ought to learn from it.

The Theme of Proverbs. (7)

Explanation:

The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Knowledge.

Fools Despise Wisdom and Instruction.

Argumentation:

What does it mean to “fear the Lord?”

Real Fear, but not a hateful fear.

Am I more afraid of offending man or offending God?

Can a lost person be wise?

Lost people can have a certain wisdom in natural revelation and common grace. But only through the fear of the Lord can one truly be wise.

God can say that, He defines wisdom.

The First Command of This Proverb. (8-9)

Explanation:

Hear Your Father’s Instruction.

Do Not Forsake Your Mother’s Teaching.

The Wreath and Necklace.

Argumentation:

The Beauty of a parents instruction.

What if I don’t have parents to learn from?

Fair enough. We can learn from those who have gone before.

In our society, we have this audacious idea that we have it all figured out. Anyone before us was merely antiquated and backwards. This is patently wrong and backwards of the entirety of human history. All of humanity knew it had to learn from those who went before us. Now, the idea is that we are so far beyond them that they have nothing to teach us. Yeah right. Good luck with that. In your limited years, you know more than the entirety of the human conversation? Good luck.

Learn from Solomon.

Read some old books.

Commit to being parents who will teach your children wisdom.

The Primary Command and Explanation. (10-19)

Explanation:

Do Not Consent to the Enticing of Sinners.

The Desire of the Wicked.

Let us lie in wait for blood.

Let us ambush the innocent without cause.

Let us swallow them alive like Sheol.

In this we will find wealth and spoil.

Join us and we will all be rich.

Do Not Walk With Them.

They run to evil.

Isaiah 59:7 Their feet run to evil,
And they are quick to shed innocent blood;
Their thoughts are thoughts of wickedness;
Devastation and destruction are in their highways.
Romans 3:15-16 “Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16 Destruction and misery are in their paths,

They hasten to shed innocent blood.

This is a trap, and I am warning you of it.

The evil are lying in wait for their own blood.

They are draining their own life.

Argumentation:

Two types of wicked people to avoid. Those who shed innocent blood and those who seek dishonest gain.

Those who shed innocent blood.

There are still those who shed innocent blood.

What is innocent blood? Life that has committed no crime deserving of death. Life, from conception to natural death.
Exodus 21:12-13 “He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.13 But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint you a place to which he may flee.”
Deuteronomy 19:10 10 So innocent blood will not be shed in the midst of your land which Yahweh your God gives you as an inheritance, and bloodguiltiness be on you.

This goes beyond just shedding of blood literally.

Avoid those who consume life. Those who seek to destroy life. (Liars, gossips, etc; anyone who destroys and consumes the lives of others.)

Those who seek dishonest gain.

Do not keep council with those who seek dishonest gain in any way.

How do we avoid them? Do not walk in their way. Literally, do not be part of their group. Do not be numbered among them. Do not walk with them in life.

“Hey I am with these guys!” Where the guys you are “with” are those who shed innocent blood or seek dishonest gain.
“Hey, I am a ________!” Where the blank is a group who shed innocent blood or prophet from dishonest gain.
“Hey, I am one of these people who do tons of good, but who also shed innocent blood...” Do not be numbered among them. This would be like, “Hi, I am part of the church of the Aztec gods and goddesses. We have great employee benefits, but sadly we also offer innocent women in the volcano every other Tuesday. Pluses and minuses.”
Do not walk with them in life. Clearly this is not a hard and fast rule to avoid any of these people in every interaction in life. We cannot do that. Life is too messy for that, and we are to witness to these people. But we must do what Christ did. Do not be afraid to be around sinners. But don’t sin with them! Jesus ate with tax collectors. Jesus did not condone or engage in fraud. Jesus ate with tax collectors to call them to repent.
Here is a good rule. If you are in the company of those who shed innocent blood or make dishonest gain and you don’t call them passionately to repent and trust in Christ, you’re doing it wrong. If you are agreeing with or lessening their sin from what God says it is, you are doing it wrong. You can be around the wicked, but you cannot be of or with the wicked. You can sit with them, but you cannot engage in or justify their sin. I hope that clarifies. If not, hear the words of the Psalmist.
Psalm 1:1-2
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the way of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of Yahweh,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
Do not be in their council. Do not love their ways. Love the Word of God. Love the commands of God. Then you’ll be fine.

The Wicked consume themselves.

There is a parasitic nature to sin. It consumes you and destroys you.

The Wicked are like vampires trying to suck life out of others only to end up with their lives being consumed.

This is because these wicked are under the judgement of God.

Do you fear God or Man?

The Wicked will call to you. Will you offend them to honor God? Or will you offend God to honor them?

The Poetic Dialogue of Wisdom. (20-33)

Explanation:

Wisdom is a Woman.

She cries out in the street.

How long will the naive love being simple minded?

How long will the scoffers love scoffing?

How long will fools hate knowledge?

Turn and Hear Wisdom’s Rebuke!

She will pour out her spirit on you.

She will teach you.

You refused the call of Wisdom.

You rejected her hand.

You neglected her counsel.

You did not want her rebuke.

Because of this, Wisdom will...

She will laugh at your calamity.

She will mock you when dread comes.

When the dread comes and they call on her, she will no longer answer.

Because they hated knowledge.

Because they did not fear the Lord.

Because they rejected the Lady Wisdom...

They will eat the fruit they grew.

They will be satisfied with their own devices.

Those who reject wisdom will die in their folly, destroyed by their own foolishness.

Those who listen to wisdom will live securely.

Argumentation:

The Wicked and fools refuse the rebuke of wisdom.

The Righteous and Wise hear the rebuke of wisdom and love her.

Those who hate the rebuke of Wisdom are doomed to be consumed by their own wickedness.

This does not mean they will suffer in this life. It means they are under the judgement of God.

Those who hear the call of wisdom and love her are blessed with the fruits of righteousness.

This does not mean all will be well. But it means you are not offending God.

Primary Application:

Fear God and Love Wisdom.

Do Not Walk in the Way of the Wicked.

Learn to Love the Call of Wisdom.
