We are back into Romans. We are going to pick up in Romans Chapter 6. Last week I took a detour and we talked about what attributes Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego led to a relationship close enough to God that Jesus joined them in the furnace of Fire. This week Paul is going to walk us through what should be the out pouring we see demonstrated in a person who has be set free.
The Title of today’s message is The Results of Freedom.
There really should be a contrast in our lives that shows visible change in who we were before we were Justified and who we are after we were Justified. Let’s dive into the scripture.
We are going to begin the second section of this chapter. Paul is basically cutting the questions that are probably are being asked by the people hearing this letter being read.
Paul has just led the Romans through this mind blowing idea that they were saved by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross alone. It wasn’t by works, it wasn’t by their ability to do good., it wasn’t by their ability to live up to the standards set forth by the law.
It was by Grace through Faith.
Now naturally you have that Guy in the crowd. We all know him that holier than thou push his glasses down so he can look over them as he is looking down on you guy who asks this first Question.
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
That is to say do we just keep on sinning so Jesus’ grace can be demonstrated all the more. More Grace right! It’s like Oprah we just get free stuff.
Then comes the next question.

15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace?
Well now that we are free of the law it’s a free for all right. You know as long as I don’t break the laws that are important to me right. I get to set the parameters right.
Thou shall only murder those who I deem not an inconvenience to someone’s poor choices.
Paul answers both questions the same way.

NO! You should not keep sinning. If you keep sinning you are going to give up your Freedom!
Paul is saying: You have been Justified, You have been set free. Don’t give that up.
The first result of Freedom should be a hatred of the very thing that kept you bound.

Stop looking for loop holes and just walk away.

Under Law: Keeping the rules so you can be righteous in God’s sight.

3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law.
4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.

Justification is the act of God whereby He forgives the unsaved person’s sin and credits to them the righteousness of Christ when through faith they believe.

18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
Sanctification is the process whereby the believer becomes more and more like Jesus (holy) as a result of God’s work in them and their obedience to His Word.

21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
