Today we will look at the second person of the trinity, The Son. This statement will take the next four weeks and this morning we will be talking about the person of Jesus.
As we begin today, I want to start with a warning.

Warning

The TRUTH about who Jesus is, is crucial

Matthew 24:24 ESV
24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
1 Timothy 4:1 ESV
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 ESV
13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Don’t be fooled by “reasonable” arguments

Colossians 2:1–4 ESV
1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.

Do not be taken captive

Colossians 2:8 ESV
8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Destroy error and lies

2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
As we dig into our statement on The Son I want you to remember how important this is. False Teachers, Demonic lies, Worldly Philosophies will creep in amongst us if we are not vigilant to study the Word and to live according to the Truth.

Our Statement on the Son

We believe the Son is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who is fully God and fully man; one person with two natures.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born by the virgin Mary, grew in favor with God and man and lived a sinless life in perfect obedience to the Father’s will.
He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, died, was buried, rose from the dead, and in his resurrected body had fellowship with his disciples.
He is our perfect Prophet, Priest and King who ascended into Heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father as our advocate.
As our Prophet, he makes the Truth of God known to mankind through the inspiration of scripture, his personal ministry, and the appointing of gifted teachers.
As our Priest, he satisfied the wrath of God against us by offering himself as the just payment for our sin. He brings us into relationship with God by giving us his own righteousness, interceding with God on our behalf when we sin.
As our King, he defeated sin and death and stripped his enemies of power. He is at the right hand of God reigning over his kingdom and ruling his church. One day he will return in power and glory to bring judgment and reward.

One person with two natures

We believe the Son is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who is fully God and fully man; one person with two natures.

Jesus is God

John 1:1–2 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

Jesus became flesh

John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Fully God and Fully Man

Colossians 2:9 ESV
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

God became Man

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born by the virgin Mary, grew in favor with God and man and lived a sinless life in perfect obedience to the Father’s will.

Jesus grew as we do

Luke 2:52 ESV
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

Jesus became one of us

Philippians 2:5–11 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus became our sin

2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Proven in History

He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, died, was buried, rose from the dead, and in his resurrected body had fellowship with his disciples.

Proof of His appearing

Appeared to the women

Matthew 28:9–10 ESV
9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

Appeared to the disciples

John 20:26–29 ESV
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Appeared to a crowd of 500

1 Corinthians 15:6 ESV
6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.

Appeared to His brother James

1 Corinthians 15:7 ESV
7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

Appeared to them for 40 days

Acts 1:3–8 ESV
3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

He is our Advocate before the Father

He is our perfect Prophet, Priest and King who ascended into Heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father as our advocate.

God is for us

Romans 8:31–34 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

Jesus stands on our behalf

Hebrews 9:24 ESV
24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
