Warning About False Teachers
Opening Prayer
The Warning of False Teachers.
“But”
Peter just established 2 important truths (see 2 Peter 1:21)
Prophesy 9God truth) comes from God not man
Our connection to that truth is the Holy Sprit.
Chapter two show opposition the church faces to chapter one.
Ch 1 - Jesus provided a way for a relationship with God
We should respond by seeking to take one qualities that honor God.
Even will all of this being true … the church has and will face opposition!!!!
False Prophets vs False Teachers
Prophets were OT people who spoke a word from God.
Claim to be sent by God with a message but actually haven’t.
More importantly their message is not from God.
This issue was very serious.
False Prophets were dangerous to God’s people.
Lead people to false gods
Lead people away from God’s truth.
Jeremiah 14 is one example.
Being a false prophet was a SERIOUS SIN!!!!
Following false prophets also came with dire consequences.
“Just as there will be false teachers ...”
Establishing that False Teacher is just as bad.
“secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, ...”
secretly - slip in without anyone noticing
Sometimes you can see false teachers
Sometimes you can’t (the devil is crafty)
bring destructive heresies -
Not only false but against the truth of God.
(untrue doctrine)
Also described as “Destructive”
denying the Master who bought them
The most destructive of all they deny Christ.
Possibly they deny who Jesus is
Deny - also means DISOWN, RENOUNCE
“Bringing swift destruction on themselves.”
Just as false prophets faced dire judgment from God...
So do false teachers
In Jeremiah’s that didn’t end well for those who followed the false prophets either.
The Effects of False Teachers.
Many will follow them...
False teacher continue to be a major problem for the church
Not only because they stray from the truth
They take so many people with them.
Follow their sensuality
This gives us an idea of the appeal these false teachers will have on the church.
They will follow what feels good.
This could mean sexual sin
Think about James teaching that people will be drawn away by what their itching ears want to hear.
The truth will be blasphemed
blasphemed = reviled, slandered, ridiculed.
What is being ridiculed it the “WAY OF THE TRUTH”
This includes all that the Church proclaims as truth
FOUNDATIONALLY: Jesus Christ died for our sins and is the ONLY way to God.
Some ridicule who we say Jesus is
Some ridicule our claim that we need Him.
Modern Day Example:
The Motivation and Destruction of False Teachers.
Some will simply seek to make a prophet by collecting a crowd to follow them.
We see these false teachers and they are sometimes obvious.
Sometimes not… there are plenty of church who trade the truth for popularity and gain financially.
For others this GREED is the popularity they will gain from pushing this false,
Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
False teaching has always been a serious issue for God’s people.
It has a destructive to the work of God
It leads to condemnation and destruction for those who practice it
It also lead to the same for those who follow them.
