Hebrews 11:1-3
This year we have been focusing on the purpose statement for our church.
Fully devoted to Christ
Biblically growing in Christ
Loving others through Christ
We talked about Loving God and loving each other.
We have talked about being connected and working together.
We have just finished a 10 week series on how we ought to treat one another.
Today I would like to begin a series that will help us in two areas of the purpose statement.
Being fully devoted to Christ and Biblically growing in Christ.
I want to begin a series on Living by Faith, a verse by verse look at Hebrews chapter 11, or the Hall of Faith.
For centuries man has tried to define what it means to live by faith.
Theologians have tried to nail down what true faith is:
Faith - Trusting God
Faith - Living without scheming
Faith - Obeying without provision
Defining is important, however it is much more informative and helpful to see a life lived by faith in action.
We are often told that the best teacher is an example.
In other words, we learn best when we can see it done.
My Dad is good at fixing cars.
I hate working on cars.
For years he tried to explain how to do something, but when I saw him do it, or did it my self by his example and watchful eye, I did much better.
The author of Hebrews is taking the same approach to the life of faith.
He doesn’t just explain…he shows through the lives of those who have successfully lived their lives in faith.
So we begin this exciting journey to discover men and women who lived their lives through faith.
In the introduction to the accounts of these lives, we find described for us the inner workings of faith.
Understanding how something works gives a better understanding of how to use it.
So what are the inner workings of faith?
How does faith work?
Remember, salvation is not by works—however it ought to produce works in the life of the Christian!
Before we study the lives of men and women of faith, let’s lift the hood on the life of faith in order to understand fully the inner workings of faith.
Notice three required components to a life of demonstrated faith in Jesus Christ.
I. Faith’s Core Values
vs.1
Here we are told what faith is.
Faith is not defined here, but it is described by indicating its core values.
The word substance literally means, “to stand under or to support.”
It means it’s guarantee, that which holds it up.
Core values are what stand under, support, and drive either a company, corporation, or an organization toward its goals.
What drives and supports true faith that makes it worth living?
A. A Hope in God’s Promises
vs.1a
True Bible faith is confident obedience to God’s Word in spite of circumstances and consequences.
Faith operates quite simply:
God speaks
We hear
We trust
We act
Faith is the living hope that no matter what happens, as long as I am following God’s principles and commands, He will work all things together for good in my life.
Faith is a confident hope in the God of the Bible!
If we are to know Him we must know His Word!
Christians who don’t Live by faith have yet to plant themselves by the rivers of the Word of God.
But believers who are learning to walk by faith, not by sight, are the ones who have determined to read, love, honor, and meditate upon the Word of God.
Only by living in the Word of God will we be able to live by faith!
“I prayed for faith and thought it would strike me like lightning.
But faith did not come.
One day I read, ‘Now faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.’
I had closed my Bible and prayed for faith.
I now began to study my Bible and faith has been growing ever since.”—Dwight
L. Moody
B. An Hope in God’s Path
v.1b
Faith is described as an evidence of things not seen.
A future, a destination.
When we are living by faith, we will not only hope in God’s Promises, but we will also keep our eyes on the forward growth of the Christian Walk.
That is, we will follow the clear, direct path that God has laid out in His Word!
Look again at Psalm 1—notice the rest of the chapter: He spoke of the godly man, but the contrast is given in the next three verses.
So many Christians want to continue on their own path and still have the blessings of God in their life
But, you cannot have both.
Faith is a complete trust in God and His path; living life His way!
Listen to David’s testimony in Psalm 18:
Faith is not looking for our own way, but fully committing to live life God’s way.
People go their own path everyday and wonder why they don’t have peace.
Why do they have some many struggles and broken relationships.
Faith realizes that God can only bless obedience.
You say, “Well, it’s worked out for me.
I’ve still got a job, home, food.
I’m okay!”
Remember what Jesus said.
You may have sun and rain—but peace, love, and joy are reserved for the faithful!
Faith in God, at its core value, honors the way of God with obedience and faithfulness.
The second required area of a life lived by faith is...
II.
Faith’s Contented Life
Now, once we have built a core value to our faith, we must build its living character.
Biblical faith’s core values are:
Hope in God’s promises
Hope in God’s pathway
And one of it’s defining character traits is contentment!
Character is defined as a characteristic property that defines the individual nature of something.
I believe that the number one reason Christians have failed to live by faith is because of a lack of contentment in Christ and an enamorment with the riches of the world.
What are we to find ourselves contented in?
A. A Committed Walk
Verse 2
They were called “elders” denoting the fact that their faith was lived out their entire life.
Elder is defined as — one who presides over.
An older member or a senior partner.
One who has had longevity.
Here we find that faith is content to continue walking in the faith.
Throughout your life you will be challenged to leave your walk of faith.
