LET’S MOVE ON

TEXT: Deuteronomy 2:1-7

Introduction

A.        There are 2 Great Dangers in the Christian Life -

1.      Getting Ahead of the Lord

2.      Doing NOTHING!

B.        As we grow in grace and knowledge, we better discern God’s will for our lives.

1.      In our text, we find that Israel had been wandering for a period of 40 years since they came out of bondage.

2.      During the course of those years, many things had occurred - most of which was a result of their Unbelief.

C.        Finally, after what should have only taken 11 days (from Horeb by way of Mt. Seir unto Kadesh-Barnea - Deut. 1:2), we find that the message of the LORD is "Ye have compassed this mountain long enough!"

D.        What a message! This is same message needs to be heard in the Church today!!

1.      Deuteronomy - "A Book of Remembrance"

2.      The Book of Deuteronomy is a "Book of Remembrance".

E.        It has been said, "Those who do not learn from the past are destined to repeat it."

F.         God told Moses to remind the new generation of Israel why their ancestors had wandered and died in the wilderness, rather than enjoy the blessings of the Promised Land.

1.      Moses reminded the Israelites that it was because of Unbelief that their fathers failed to "enter in".

2.      They had wandered in the desert and failed to be what God had wanted the nation of Israel to be - "An Example of the Lord to an Unbelieving World!"

G.       For the past 40 years, Israel had murmured and complained, rather than live according to God’s Word!

H.        Now, however, it was time for the nation to move forward!

I.           The Rebuke - "Ye Have Compassed This Mountain Long Enough"

A.        One of the saddest things to see in Christendom today is a church that was once a vibrant, soul-winning church, but now has become complacent or a Christian that was once active in the Service of the Lord become complacent.

1.      Like the nation of Israel, many today are content to wander in the wilderness.

2.      Wilderness wandering is safe and comfortable! There are very few obstacles to overcome in the Wilderness.

3.      Many are not prepared to "Enter Into Victorious Living" pictured by Canaanland - That is a place of Battles and Obstacles!

4.      Many would rather murmur and complain that they do not have their wants supplied!

B.        God never promised to supply wants / Only our NEEDS! (vs. 7).

1.      Are we content with our present ministries here at Heritage???

2.      Are we content to finish our course at our present pace???

3.      Are we satisfied with what the LORD has done, or do we want to see God work in miraculous ways in the days and years to come??

4.      May I suggest - "Ye have compassed this mountain long enough!"

5.      I truly believe that God is ready and "able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ASK or THINK according to the power that WORKETH in US" Ephesians. 3:20

6.      Many are fearful--I know--but, there is no pleasure in the wilderness, but there is great blessing in the Promised Land - a land that is filled with battles & blessings.

7.      There must be battles fought in order to enjoy the blessings that God would have us to possess.

8.      We wrestle against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places - We ARE Soldiers of Jesus Christ! Soldiers will never be content wandering in the desert of complacency!

II.         The Requirement - "Turn You Northward"

A.        "Looking Northward" is what everyone of us need to do on a daily basis.

1.      If we do not look unto the Lord we will never know what God would have us to do;

2.      We would never have that inner confidence that comes in knowing that all is well with our souls; that we are not alone.

3.      Prayer, Seeking God’s Will, and Obeying His Word are all ways of "Looking Northward".

4.      The Word of God teaches that Isaiah Looked in 3 Directions: Isaiah 6:1-6

a)      Upward Look - "I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple." (vs. 1-4)

b)      Inward Look - "Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone; I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." (vs. 5)

c)      Outward Look - "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me." (vs. 6)

5.      The truth is, none of us are worthy of the blessings of the LORD, but He still desires to bless us.

6.      As we "Turn Northward" toward the Lord, we will no doubt learn to expect great things from He who is willing and able to bless us exceeding abundantly more than we ask or think!

B.        Commandments to the Believer:

1.      Pass Through the Coast of Your Brethren - We who are saved are only passing through - this is not our home. We, like Abraham, are looking for a city whose builder and maker is God. 1John 2:15 "Love NOT the world!"

2.      Take Ye Good Heed unto Yourselves - Besides looking unto the Jesus, we are also admonished to look unto ourselves. Why? We need to have a regular self-examination, confessing all sins in our lives.

3.      Meddle NOT with Them –

a)      God’s Word exhorts believers to "Come Out from Among Them and Be Ye Separate!" 2 Corinthians 6:17

b)      When we take part in the sins of the world, we cannot be walking by faith.

C.        Contact with World But NOT Conduct of World

III.       The Reminder - "Thou Hast Lacked Nothing"

A.        There are four reminders for Believers found in vs. 7:

1.      Favour of God - "For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee"

2.      Wisdom of God - "He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness"

3.      Presence of God - "The Lord thy God hath been with thee."

4.      Sufficiency of God - "Thou Hast Lacked Nothing!"

B.        Remember, as God was with the Children of Israel, he will be with us.

Conclusion

Have you compassed the mountain in your life that is keeping you from receiving the Blessings of God long enough.  If so, why not come and make a commitment to Him that you will turn Northward.
