Mark 3:31–35 CSB
31 His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent word to him and called him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him and told him, “Look, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters are outside asking for you.” 33 He replied to them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 Looking at those sitting in a circle around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Concern of the Family

31 His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent word to him and called him.

Christian Standard Bible (Chapter 3)
21 When his family heard this, they set out to restrain him, because they said, “He’s out of his mind.”

Crowd Asks Jesus To Look Towards His Family

Mark 3:32 CSB
32 A crowd was sitting around him and told him, “Look, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters are outside asking for you.”

Jesus Takes This Moment As A Teaching Opportunity By Responding With A Question

Jesus Takes This Moment And Teaches The Importance of Becoming Apart of Spiritual Family of God

Mark 3:34 CSB
34 Looking at those sitting in a circle around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!

Our Own Application: How Can We Become Members of This Spiritual Family that is Sitting in the Inner Circle?

Instead being isolated from Jesus; How can we gain access to the spiritual presence of Jesus and be recipients of the the precious promises that are given to the family of God that are found in Scripture. Most importantly, How can we have confidence in a hope of an eternal life in the very presence of our creator.
Revelation 21:3–5 CSB
3 Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. 5 Then the one seated on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new.” He also said, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.”

Jesus’ Answer As To The How

Mark 3:35 CSB
35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
Understanding the Will of God is a complex idea in Scripture, but I want to keep our focus on the context of what Jesus is referring to in Mark 3
Jake and Johnny and Sam talk.. you must surrender your own will in order to do God’s will.
John 1:9–11 CSB
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
John 1:12–13 CSB
12 But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

28 “What can we do to perform the works of God?” they asked.

29 Jesus replied, “This is the work of God—that you believe in the one he has sent.”

Consider the Cost: Following Christ Often Comes With A Temporal Cost

Matthew 10:37–39 CSB
37 The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.

Our Question In Closing

Your Will Be Done Or God’s Will Done?
Revelation 22:1–5 CSB
1 Then he showed me the river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the city’s main street. The tree of life was on each side of the river, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree are for healing the nations, 3 and there will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 Night will be no more; people will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will give them light, and they will reign forever and ever.
