The Return of the King
Today is Father’s Day.
What do father’s do?
They train/lead their children up the way they think is correct.
Some do it accidently, in other words, they don’t think about the best way.
I tend to think about things, but sometimes I just wing it.
One thing I made a mistake about in fathering is I should have granted more grace.
God grants us grace and we should as well.
We as parents should be raising up our kids and heading them in the direction they should go.
One of those ways is to increasingly give them responsibility as they get older.
Just like what God does.
Today, we are going talk about a king that goes away for a bit and then returns.
When he returns, he examines what they have done with what they were given.
The Reference
We need to discuss the frame of Reference that this story is told in.
Jesus had just talked to Zacchaeus.
He’s in Jericho.
He’s about to go to Jerusalem.
There is a strikingly similar story that happened in history.
They could have standing next to the palace that Archelaus had built on his return.
The point however, is that Jesus is about to go away where he will receive a kingdom.
Before the king leaves, he gives some of his servants:
The Responsibility
In Luke 19:13
In a similar parable, Jesus gave out different talents.
Here is is a mina or a pound as it’s called.
One point in the Matthew 25 account is that the gifts are given according to their ability.
Here it’s all the same.
It’s not about what we are given or how much.
In fact, the amount given is very small.
Yes, we all are given different gifts and responsibilities.
It’s not important what we are given, but what we do with it.
The Rebellion
While the king is away, a rebellion happens.
Notice that he citizens hated him.
No reason is given for it.
That actually mirrors what happened to Jesus.
Unlike the Declaration of Independence, they just hated him.
Have you ever noticed that many people are angry at God.
They are awfully angry at someone they don’t believe exists.
The Return
After awhile, the king returns.
We don’t know when Jesus will return.
But he’s coming back.
That’s the point here.
The king said he would return.
When he gets back, he calls his servants into account.
What did the do with what they were given?
Each one of us here was given something.
Some of us were given kids, some will have kids.
What did we do with what we were given?
I’ll be honest, when it comes to ministry I feel like I’ve not been given much.
I don’t really have a music talent, I have just developed what I have.
I’m not a dynamic preacher.
I don’t have the gift of gab.
God did give me a good understanding of scripture and the ability to teach it.
But this week at camp, I saw that God will do with with what I have.
We invested that money this week.
Who knows what the return will be.
We do know this: there were at least 2 saved and several rededications.
The Rewards
I want you to look at the difference between the amounts that were entrusted with and the rewards.
One is a few bucks vs. rule over an entire city.
I want you to understand, every second you spend doing the work of the kingdom will be rewarded times a number that can’t be counted.
One of those things to invest in is our children.
Investing in others rewards us exponentially.
I needed to be looking for a job last week, but God had something else in mind.
I have no idea what that was, but I guarantee that people were blessed.
I have never seen that much willingness for the kids to want to help.
I got some of my rewards before I get any rewards.
Dads, I have something to say to you.
I have never heard a dad say “I wished I had spent more time working instead of being with my kids.”
It’s usually the other way around.
God has given us whatever he has given us and we need to do something with it.
If we hold on to it, then we are just as those that rebel against him.
Jesus is coming again.
Are you investing for him?
Are you investing your time?
