The Signs and Authority of Jesus

Key verse: John 2:18
John 2:18 NASB95
18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”
Key Words: Sign, authority
Event: Passover
Location: Temple in Jerusalem
Audience: Disciples, Jews selling in the temple

It applies primarily to the festival that recalled the event of the exodus, when the angel of death passed over the homes of the Israelites and struck the firstborn son in all Egyptian homes (Exod. 12:43; 34:25).

Purpose: John 2:23
John 2:23 NASB95
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.
John is telling us that many believed in the name of Jesus as they were observing the signs which Jesus was doing.

I. In cleansing the temple, Jesus showed zeal to preserve the honor due to God. (John 2:13-16)

John 2:13–16 NASB95
13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.”
- The temple has to be kept Holy, set-apart for the purpose of worship not a place of business.
- The temple belongs to God and it must be used according to how God designed it to be used.
Mark 11:17 NASB95
17 And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a robbersden.”
Today, the Jerusalem temple does not exist anymore. It was destroyed on AD 70 as fulfilled by the prophecy of Jesus
Mark 13:1–2 NASB95
1 As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, behold what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.”
Luke 13:34–35 NASB95
34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! 35 “Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
The historian Josephus actually witnessed the siege and aftermath, and said…
“Now as soon as the army had no more people to slay or to plunder, because there remained none to be the objects of their fury, Titus Caesar gave orders that they should now demolish the entire city and Temple…”
Other than a few towers and forts for the Roman garrison, everything was destroyed.
“It was so thoroughly laid even with the ground by those that dug it up to the foundation, that there was left nothing to make those that came thither believe Jerusalem had ever been inhabited.”
(The Wars of the Jews or History of the Destruction of Jerusalem. Book VII, Chapter 1.1)
In the NT, the temple (Sanctuary) where God resides is the church 1 Cor. 3:16-17(assembly of believers) and in the believers body 1 Cor. 6:19.
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 NASB95
16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.
1 Corinthians 6:19 NASB95
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
Romans 12:1 NASB95
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Application:
Set your body/life apart for God’s purposes - let your bodies be living sacrifices (as opposed to dead sacrifice)

II. Jesus fulfilled his prophecy of “Bodily Resurrection” (John 2:18-22)

John 2:18–22 NASB95
18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
Application:
- We can trust the Words of Jesus - We can trust His Holy Word the Bible.
- Since Jesus overcome the grave, those who believed in him will also overcome the grave.
John 11:25–26 NASB95
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

III. Jesus is all-knowing (John 2:24-25)

Application:
- Do not make the mistake of thinking that you can hide something from Jesus!
- Remember that Jesus knows what is in your heart.
He knows if you believe in Him
He knows if you have doubt in Him
Jesus knows everything about you - even the smallest sins that you are hiding.
he knows all that!
But do not despair! God gave us a way to be saved from the punishment of sin!
Jesus came to die for sinners! (Romans 5:8)
Jesus is inviting the restless, hopeless, hell-bound sinners to come to Him for rest and salvation (Matthew 11:27-29)
the Bible says,
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Luke 5:31–32 NASB95
31 And Jesus answered and said to them, “It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Matthew 11:27–29 NASB95
27 “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Proper Response:

Come to Him!
Jesus has the authority to forgive your sins!
Jesus has the authority to give eternal life
1 John 5:13 NASB95
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
