David’s Conviction, Plea, and Response

Introduction

This week is the Southern Baptist Convention. Thousands of Baptists, representing their churches, will vote on measures being presented. Please be in prayer for our messengers as they voted accordingly to their convictions on issues, matters, and opportunities.
Let’s pray for them now.

Transition

Today, we will be in Psalm 51. As you turn there, let me set the scene so we can understand how to apply this passage.

Context

Israel was at war and instead of going to war with the people, David stayed in his palace. He was overlooking the town and noticed a beautiful woman and inquired about her. He discovered she was married yet sought her anyway. He had intimate relations with her and then had her husband killed.
What do we know? David committed lust, adultery, and murder. What happened next? God sent Nathan to call David to repentance.
Go home and read 2 Samuel 11-12 (Page 262 if you want to take the blue Bible with you)

READ PSALM 51

WHAT DOES SIN CAUSE?

Need for Mercy
Psalm 51:1 “Have mercy upon me, .....blot out my transgressions.”
Psalm 51:2 “Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51:9 ...blot out all mine iniquities.”
Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:14 “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness....”
Nothing we can do
Psalm 51:16 “For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.”
We see very clearly God must do the cleansing. Only God can deal with our sin. So how does God do this?
The entire Old Testament is about Jesus. We see one example here. Look at verse 7 with me.
Psalm 51:7 “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
Hyssop was used for spreading blood on doorposts at Passover
Hyssop was used as Israel was in the wilderness to sacrifice – because they could not use alters everywhere they went.
Hyssop was used to cleanse lepers: take two birds, kill one and spread its blood on hyssop. Use the hyssop plant to sprinkle blood on the other bird. Let the live bird fly away. JESUS (Leviticus 14)
All along, from Genesis to Revelation, we see Jesus as the savior.

We now know sin causes a need for mercy that only God can provide. What else does sin cause?

A Strain on Our Relationship with God Psalm 51:11 “Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.”
Does sin cause the Holy Spirit to be away from us? Does sin make God so mad that He leaves us?
NO!!!!
Why is he afraid the Spirit will be taken away?
In reality, he is not actually afraid the Spirit will be taken away; rather, he, through his sin, has lost the joy of his salvation.
Loss of joy Psalm 51:12 “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.”
He lost joy… not salvation!
Sorrow / Brokenness
Psalm 51:8 “Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.”
Psalm 32:4 “ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer
Imagine the strongest relationship you have. Whether it be a spouse, child, parent, friend, grandparent, or what have you. Let’s say you offend them in some great way. And let’s say some time passes and you refuse to deal with it. Most likely, if this is really your best relationship, it may create some frustration in the relationship but it won’t end it. You are still loved by the other person. And the other person will still do anything for you. But maybe they just want to talk about it first. And, most certainly, you fully knowing your offense are uneasy and uncertain about their love. “Will they forgive me?” “Have I done too much?” Your offense creates doubt. Meanwhile, your grandmother has never even considered ceasing to love you.
While this is not a perfect example, I hope it helps you understand how God’s presence NEVER leaves a believer.
So he won’t leave us… and nothing we do can end our relationship… so how is the relationship repaired?
He wants us as we are — do not fix yourself first (Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”)
Men despise that which is broken, but God will not. He will not refuse or reject it.

HOW DOES REPENTANCE HAPPEN?

Admit your sin — Saved or not, seek forgiveness of sin
Psalm 32:3 “For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.”
--------- SKIP IF TIME IS AN ISSUE --------
Verse 4: Does this mean I do not need to apologize to others?
NO. This simply means that it is God that can judge and forgive; Also, He will be affected forever and sinning against Him is the greatest wrong.
Matthew 5:23-24 “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”
Let’s return to how repentance happens...
---------- STOP SKIP ----------
Seek God to cleanse you — do not become a member, get baptized, take communion, serve, join a community group, tithe, etc… Psalm 51:6 “Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”
Psalm 51:10 “ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. “Create in me a clean heart” — Same word as Genesis 1:1 when God created the world. It means “TOTALLY NEW.” Not fixed or repaired.... NEW.
Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”
CAN YOU REPLACE YOUR OWN HEART? No. You need a surgeon… you need God.
2 Samuel 12:13 “David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.”
What joy that must’ve been for David to hear. He was so scared and was reassured God provided mercy!

FRUIT OF REPENTANCE

Humility
Context tells us he could have just had Nathan killed or silenced but chose to admit sin instead
Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
He acknowledges he never had a chance of being sinless
Psalm 51:16 “For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.”
He cannot offer enough
What else can we expect in our lives after receiving mercy?
Praises to Him
We see the desire of David after forgiveness to praise
Psalm 51:15 “O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.”
Proclaim the Good News
Psalm 51:13 “Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.”
...............
Love others
Ask God to bless us and cast our punishment of sin elsewhere so that our homes, churches, and community may be a place of worship
Psalm 51:18-19 “Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.”

Transition

David’s sin is still one of the worst sins we can fathom. There were numerous ways he could have responded yet he chose to deal with his brokenness and sorrow by admitting sin and seeking mercy. Of course, God was with him the whole time and offered mercy immediately. David’s response was one of humility, praise, evangelism, and intercessory prayer.
