The theme of these lessons has been to examine the “Lessons From The Psalms.”
They are a vital study for any child of God desiring to learn how to worship God properly.
Over the last several weeks we have looked at a number of different psalms.
Today, we find ourselves looking at Psalm 16.
The heading of this psalm is said to be “A Miktam of David.”
No one knows the actual meaning of this word though some have rabbinical sources hypothesize it to mean, “a golden psalm.”
So, our lesson this evening is going to be looking at “David’s Golden Secret.”
David’s secret, spoiler alert, was that he placed his trust in the LORD, delighted in the LORD’s saints, and found the LORD’s inheritance to be good.
With this in mind let’s examine our lesson for this evening.
In Psalm 16:1-8 we read of David finding refuge in life.

In Psalm 16:1-3 we find two important factors in determining if “the LORD is our Lord.”
The LORD is our lord if…
We can take refuge in our LORD.
1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.
17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
We can delight in our LORD’s saints, i.e., delight in fellowship.
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,
7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.
The LORD is our Lord if we take refuge in him and delight in his saints.
We also see what it’s like not having “the LORD as our Lord.”
Idol worship only leads to sorrow.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Our refuge in life is making “the LORD our Lord.”

When God created mankind he allowed us to have freedom of choice.
This meant we could “choose to love him and find refuge in him or choose not to.”
For the one that trusts in the LORD however, there is no real choice.
Why, because who would choose the dangers and outcomes of choosing to not put one’s portion with the LORD.
The word “portion” means “fate, or fortune.”
When we put our “fate” in God’s hands there is literally no draw backs.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
We will have a better physical life being taken care of by God.
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
We will have a better emotional life being taken care of by God.
7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.
27 Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant!”
I understand there will be persecution with living godly lives, but those, for the one that makes the LORD their portion, are only blips on the timeline of eternity.
Our refuge in life is making the LORD our Lord and by choosing to make him our portion.
David then describes how…

When God is our master there is strength in knowing that he is on our side and when we grasp that reality we cannot help but bless or be joyfully grateful to the LORD.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Overcoming this old sinful world and learning to rejoice in even the darkest of situations is what separates those that have made the LORD their master and portion or not.
We do not possess the strength to defeat Satan and sin on our own but we can do so with God’s strength, guarding us.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Because God provides us with a life of refuge based in eternity, we can rejoice and have a heart that is glad.

God has promised every soul that if they put their portion with him he will not leave us in Sheol nor let us see corruption.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Because of this hope in the afterlife we are not like those who have not this hope.
No, like David, we must not be afraid of what comes next after this life.
In fact we are to anticipate the future.

God has not been silent on the bountiful blessings of an afterlife with him.
There will be no sorrow, no death, no sin!!!
11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
For every child of God we are living in this life with an anticipation of the future that lies ahead of us in heaven with God.
God will not allow his children to be left separated from him for eternity but rather will ransom us to him.
15 But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah
