The Good Shepherd

last week we talked about the Lord, Yahweh, is our Shepherd.
We talked about all the attributes of Him being our Shepherd
and He corrects and guides us and His goodness and loving kindness is in pursuit of us because He is our Shepard ....our keeper/protector

Now lets turn to John Chapter 10

In Chapter 9 we talked about Jesus healing the man that was born blind.
This man was healed and stood up against the Jews and because a believer in Jesus.
Jesus ends chapter 9 with explaining that He is here to give sight to the blind (spiritually)
and to the Jews that they are blind because they claim to see, they are blind.
Jesus is talking to the Jewish elites. the religious folk.
The reason We read from Ezekiel 34, is for us to see two things.
Prophecy is being fulfilled
Jesus WILL keep His Own.
We are not talking too much about Revelation right now but I’d like to show you something.
Revelation 2:1 NASB95
1 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this:
Know this, that the lampstands are the church, and the Jesus walks amongst them.
Christ WILL protect His own.
So lets continue on.
John 10:1–16 NASB95
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 2 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3 “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. 7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. 11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. 12 “He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, 15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.
This is the same day. the same situation in Chapter 9
As we examine this text we need to understand, who Jesus is talking to.
Jesus is talking to the Jewish elites. Judaism , the “whos who” of Jewish leadership
This text is talking in context to the Jewish - Judaism - and that order
lets look.

V.1-5

John 10:1–5 NASB95
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 2 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3 “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”
lets look st this from a sheep pen. The sheep pen is were all the sheep are.

Want some history???

So historically let’s look into what happened with Shepherds in Israel.
Now we know the shepherds tend to their flocks in the fields but I know they will take their flocks at night to keep their sheep.
basically storage for sheep
it wasn’t reserved for just one shepherd many Shepherd would put their sheep inside of this sheet pin.
Now there would be a man that was hired to maintain the door to keep watch at night to protect the sheep
just so no robbers or thieves will try to steal the sheep,
at times the robbers would try to enter into the sheep pen in a different way in order to steal and rob sheep
They would climb another way.
But we have a picture of the sheep pin and there was a door that the sheep went in and out
now when the shepherds return the next morning to collect their sheep (there would be a lot of sheep there)
they will call their sheep by name and there she put to follow the shepherd
they would never follow another Shepherd
Because Jesus is still talking to the Jews, in verse 1 He is making it clear by describing the Pharisees who are the false Shepard .
that try to enter, not through the door but other ways.
They are thieves and robbers, they do not have any authority of right to the sheep.
He is talking about these Jewish elites that have robbed and stolen from the people.
These thieves would snatch up the sheep, and kill them for meat or there skin, or both.
do we not have people in our world today that fit this?
So please think of this as we read the text

V.6

John 10:6 NASB95
6 This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.
The Jews did not understand. maybe because, they still think that they are not blind, They are thinking of themselves as God’s people.
Maybe they were looking at themselves as themselves being the door.
What is the door? Authority, power, right to

V.7-9

John 10:7–9 NASB95
7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
another “I Am” statement . Jesus says: “I Am” (Eco-emmi)
Jesus explains that He is the door, in which to enter the sheep fold.
Those who came before, those false teachers
Jesus also says that those who enter through Him will be saved and will go in and out and find pastures.
Time out!!! Question
What is the sheep fold then?
Is it the church?
is it heaven?
we see that one can go in and out of it. So it cant be that.
it is unity of those who have relationship with Jesus!!!!!!
This is Jews, that are believers of Jesus
So those who are in Him will be lead in and out into pastures (Psalm 23)

V. 10

John 10:10 NASB95
10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Death comes from the false teachers
the theves back then could not call the sheep and the sheep out go because the sheep knows the voice of His master, so the thieves would kill the sheep to het skin or meat.
Prosperity gospel on abundantly
abundantly - not ordinarily, remarkable, extraordinary.
money comes to me now!

v.11-13

v. 11-13
John 10:11–13 NASB95
11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. 12 “He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.
Jesus again gives another I Am statement. (ego-emmi)
Jesus is the good Shepherd, why? The Good Shepherd, the
Because He lays down His life for the sheep.
We know that Shepherd would fight for there sheep. they would fight lions, wolves, mountain cats, thieves,
Shepherd were willing to die for there sheep.
but this is different then one just dying.
lay down life (Soo-K) meaning soul. not just physical life
a hired hand will not do that. They will seek there own safety, over the life of the sheep.
We find that in out churches today.
Pastors who don't want to but put out of there comfort zone, but run at danger.
Because he does not care about the sheep.

v. 14-15

John 10:14–15 NASB95
14 “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, 15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
Jesus says that He knows His sheep same as Jesus Knows the Father
to know - intimacy
(ginosko)

v. 16

John 10:16 NASB95
16 “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.
Who are these other sheep?

v. 17-18

John 10:17–18 NASB95
17 “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
If the Shepherd is killed for His sheep the sheep would shatter. But Jesus makes it clear, that even theough He lays down His life for His sheep, He will not lose His sheep

v. 19-21

John 10:19–21 NASB95
19 A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the sayings of one demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?”
