SEVEN DANGEROUS LOVE AFFAIRS

Text: I JOHN 2:15-17

INTRODUCTION:   God’s word says love is the highest attribute of mankind It is greater than faith, greater than hope (I Corinthians. 13).

Misplaced affection can be very dangerous and I want to bring you face to face with seven dangerous love affairs.

I.           FIRST, “MEN SHALL BE LOVERS OF THEIR OWN SELVES”

2 Timothy 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

A.        The Pharisee loved himself and went home unjustified. — Luke 18

B.        God hates a proud look.

Proverbs 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

C.        Proverbs 16:18 — Says, “Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

II.        SECOND, “THE LOVE OF MONEY”

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

A.        The love of money caused the rich young ruler to turn away from Christ (Mark 10)

B.        The Apostle warns that those who covet after money ‘have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

C.        The love of money caused Balaam to curse the people of God (Numbers 22).

III.     THIRD, “THE LOVE OF THE PRAISE OF MEN”

Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

A.        Jesus said,

Matthew 23:6 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them. Otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

Mark 12:39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:

B.        King Saul of the Old Testament loved the praise of men.

IV.     FOURTH, “MEN LOVE DARKNESS RATHER THAN LIGHT”

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

A.        Men love darkness because their deeds are evil.

B.        Men love darkness because their foolish hearts are darkened.

C.        Daniel 5 is a picture of the evil of sin’s night.

V.        FIFTH, “THE LOVE FOR THE WORLD”

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

A.        Paul said, “Demas forsook him because he loved toe world.”

B.        Lots wife turned into a pillar of salt because she could not break from the world.

C.        The Rich farmer died as a fool because he lived only for this world (Luke 12).

VI.     SIXTH, “THE LOVE OF PLEASURE MORE THAN GOD”

2 Timothy 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

A.        Sampson (Judges 16); -

B.        Belshazzar (Dan. 5);

C.        King Herod (Matt. 14).

VII.  SEVENTH, “THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTO DEATH”

Rev. 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

A.        John the Baptist (Matt. 14)

B.        Steven (Acts 7)

C.        Paul to Apostle (II Tim. 4)
