The Thief

John 10:1–10 NKJV
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them. Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

We loathe a thief!

Years ago when living in an apartment in Tulsa, I had a ten speed bike. I took it on as a project to make it a bike that had everything on it you could want at the time. I had it chained outside the back sliding door in a closed wooded porch area. One morning I looked out and the chain was broken and the bike was gone. I was shocked and angry that someone would be so brazen to do this. I spent the next several days keeping an eye out for that bike to no avail. I have no sympathy for a thief. I have also had hub caps, hood ornaments, etc. stolen.

Stealing occurs in many forms.

A candy bar at a store.
A borrowed item that was never returned.
Extra money mistakenly returned by the cashier.
Cheating on income tax.
Taking things from a job site.
Not giving a day’s work for a day’s wage.
Stealing intellectual property (Music, movies, software, patents, etc.)
Scams (investment, phone, mail, internet)
Currency manipulation.
Human Trafficking
Outright Robbery (car, home, business, personal)
Withholding tithes and offerings is robbing God!

The Devil is a Thief!

Jesus described Himself as the Good Shepherd. He describes the enemy of the sheep as the thief! The thief is the devil.
1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
The devil comes to kill!
The devil want to take you out so that you cannot be saved or fulfill God’s plan.
The devil wants to take you to hell forever to keep you from experiencing God’s eternal salvation, presence, and blessing.
The devil comes to steal!
The devil wants to steal your peace, joy, love, security, mind, hope, faith, sanity, patience, self-control, future, etc.
The devil wants to steal your relationships with God, your spouse, kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters, mom, dad, church family, etc.
The devil wants to steal your health.
The devil wants to steal the blessings God has given you. (job, home, car, resources, etc.)
The devil comes to destroy!
The devil wants to destroy your life through sin, alcohol, drugs, pornography, immorality, criminal activity, and other foolish choices.
The devil wants to destroy your testimony.

Give No Place to the Devil!

Ephesians 4:27 NKJV
nor give place to the devil.
Don’t listen to the devil’s voice.
John 10:5 NKJV
Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
Don’t believe the devil’s lies.
John 8:44 NKJV
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
Don’t entertain the devil’s temptations.
Romans 13:14 NKJV
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
Don’t open the door to sin!
Genesis 4:7 NKJV
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
Dismantle the devil’s fortress of lies!
2 Corinthians 10:3–5 NKJV
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
Establish clear boundaries!

Jesus gives LIFE!

Jesus gave HIS life!
John 10:11 NKJV
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
Jesus gives us ETERNAL life!
John 3:16 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Jesus gives us ABUNDANT life!
Life in fellowship with God.
Life in freedom from sin.
Life with peace, hope, and love.
Life with purpose and meaning.
Life as God intended it!
