Introduction

Presence, Protection, Guidance
Spiritual mentor: Mark Dever
Presence…always there.
When he was on Vacation
little scared that something would happen.
Something we didn’t know how to handle.
Refreshing about his presence.
Protection…took care of us; helped me from making some very serious mistakes.
Guidance…by example, by leadership, by his correction
Times when I did make mistakes…that I had to deal with the consequences for those mistakes.
But it was in the context of love and forgiveness.
Characteristics that point us back to God.
Presence
Protection
Guidance
With those ideas in mind that I want us to turn to our passage for today.
As we look at “The Light of the World”

Passage

John 8:12-20

Outline

Point 1: Jesus is the light (v.12)
Point 2: Jesus is his own witness (v.13-18)
Point 3: Jesus’ hour had not yet come (v.19-20)

Point 1: Jesus is the light (v.12).

John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Context: Feast of Booths
John 7:37 “37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.”
Last day…this was an 8 day festival.
8th day was a sabbath.
Question…was this on the last day of feasting (the 7th day of the festival)…or the last day of the entire festival (8th day—sabbath).
There is debate on this...
Non-essential…As you heard in my sermon last week, I favor thinking it’s the 7th day.
I think what Jesus says makes more sense in the context of the water and light rites actually taking place at the time.
Which they did on the 7th day.
But not on the 8th day.
Feast of Booths Meaning
Celebrating the harvest.
Remembering Israel’s wilderness wanderings.
Three chapters in a row where Jesus is pointing back to the wilderness wanderings and then pointing to himself as the fulfillment of God’s provision.
Ch. 6: Bread of life…manna…Jesus is the bread of life.
Ch. 7: Living water…water from the rock…Jesus is the water that brings eternal life
Jesus fulfills the water rite (ceremony) of the Feast of Booths
golden jar filled with water by priests and then poured on the altar.
Ch. 8: Light of the world...
What did this parallel in the wilderness wanderings.
Specific light...
Remember back to the wilderness wanderings.
What was the light that was there with God’s people in the wilderness?
Light = Pillar
Of cloud by day and of fire by night.
Jesus fulfills the water rite
he is the water that comes to us when we are thirsty.
Brings everlasting water.
Jesus fulfills the light rite
What Did the Pillar do in the OT?
Think with me for a moment about the pillar of cloud and fire in the OT
What did the pillar represent for God’s poeple.
God’s: Presence, Protection, & Guidance
Imagine 2 million people wandering in a barren land.
What would keep them from dying…from being dehydrated, from dying of starvation, from walking into an enemies camp.
Presence & Guidance
Exodus 13:20-21 “20 And they moved on from Succoth and encamped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.”
Protection: Salvation; and ongoing protection
Exodus 14:19-20 “19 Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night.”
Ongoing: Kept their enemies at bay.
What Was the Rite in this festival?
Water rite...
Golden pitcher filled with water and then poured out on the alter.
Remembering God’s provision of water from the rock in the wilderness.
What did God’s people do at this festival to remember the pillar of light?
Big lamps
Kathleen Nielson: “The lighting of the oil lamps int the temple’s Court of the Women was a festive part of each evening during this Feast, with singing of psalms and great celebration, as light shone out over the city from the high point of the temple. Through this they celebrated God’s provision of light in the pillar that guided the Israelites with cloud by day and fire by nigh through the wilderness wanderings (Ex. 13:21-22).
William Cook: “The festival background focussed particularly on the pillar of fire that guided Israel during their wilderness wanderings and the eschatological hope of the messianic age.—quoting from the Mishnah…which is the first major written collection of the Jewish oral traditions.— ‘Toward the end of the feast of Tabernacles, people went down into the court of the women…Golden lamps were there, and four golden bowls were on each of them, and four ladders were by each, four young men from the priestly group of youths had jugs of oil in their hands and poured oil form them into individual bowls. Wicks were made from the discarded trousers of the priests and from their girdles. There was no court in Jerusalem that was not bright from the light of the place of the drawing water. Men of piety and known for their good work danced before them with torches in their hands and sang before them songs and praises. And the Levites stood with zithers and harps and cymbals and trumpets and other musical instruments without number...”
How Does Jesus Fulfill What the Pillar Did?
John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
7 “I Am” Statements
I am the bread of life (John 6:35)
I am the light of the world (John 8:12)
I am the door of the sheep (John 10:7,9)
I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)
I am the good shepherd (John 10:11, 14)
I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)
I am the true vine (John 15:1,5)
Light is a Theme of John
John 1:5 “5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Specific context of this Feast with reference to a particular light (the pillar of fire in the wilderness)
In Saying This, Jesus Is Claiming To Be God:
Jesus Is Present With Us
Immanuel…he came and tabernacled with man.
Matthew 18:20 “20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.””
Holy Spirit
Revelation 21:23-24 “23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it,”
Application: Presence of God?
How have you seen the presence of God in your life?
Where have you forgotten the presence of God
Jesus Protects Us
Salvation
Psalm 27:1 “1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Ongoing Spiritual protection
Application:
How have you seen the protecting light of God in your life and your family’s life?
Where do you need protection?
Jesus Guides Us
Proverbs 3:5-6 “5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
John 16:13 “13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
Psalm 119:105 “105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Application:
How have you seen God direct and guide you?
Brad Keeney: Lord, lead and guide!
Where do you need guidance?
Don’t Walk In Darkness
John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
What is the darkness:
To be in the darkness means not to be near the pillar.
How would they have ended up in the darkness?
Not following the fire.
Not being willing to move when God was calling.
Would have meant disobeying God
And either following their own desires or following other people.
Result
No longer are in God’s presence, protection, and guidance
True Today:
Removing ourselves from the presence and will of God results in:
Confusion and Chaos in the world.
Confusion over truth
Confusion over morality
Confusion over our identity and purpose
Ultimately judgment from God.
Some will continue to walk in darkness
John 3:19-21 “19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.””
Some remain in hatred of the light.
The Jews are blinded by the light.
Illustration of hating the light:
ones that I’ve already used.
waking up vs. light in tunnel
roaches.
Carson: “In this age, the light is in mortal combat with the darkness.”
What does it look like for us to walk in the darkness? (Flesh this out)
What does it mean to walk in darkness?
Genesis
word was without form and void...
It was a world without order…a world of chaos.
As God begins to speak...
His creation begins to take shape.
Chaos comes to order at the power of His word.
And the first Words from God that we have recorded are these: “Let there be light.”
In the dark…lack of knowledge
Doing something you’ve never done before...
riding a horse…no idea how to do it.
Reject the salvation of the Lord.
Reject the ongoing means of protection & guidance that God provides.
Protection & guidance
By Word
By Holy Spirit
Through the body of Christ
Disconnect from any of these:
If you are disconnected from any of those three things…you’re entering into darkness.
If you’re not in God’s Word…as a lamp to your feet and a light to your path…then you’re entering into darkness.
If you’re not in fellowship with God by His Spirit and seeking communion with God through prayer…then you’re entering into darkness
If you’re not integrally connected to the body of Christ and prioritizing the local church in your life…then you’re entering into darkness.
When we enter the Darkness:
We begin to walk towards or follow:
Error (belief component)
Sin (morality component)
Ultimately...Death…(no hope)
What happens in the darkness
Follow the Light
Application: Follow Jesus
Disciples follow Jesus
Learning from Jesus to live like Jesus.
We aim to make joyful passionate disciples of Jesus who love God and love their neighbor. Presence, Protection, Guidance
Light will lead you into:
Truth…as opposed to error
Moral purity…as opposed to sin
Character of God…as opposed to the character of Satan.
When Jesus shines into the world, he reveals who God is.
Life…as opposed to death.

Transition to Point 2

Point 1: Jesus is the light (v.12)
Point 2: Jesus is his own witness (v.13-18)

Point 2: Jesus is his own witness (v.13-18)

John 8:13–18 ESV
13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”
Witness Theme In John
OT Law of Multiple Witnesses
Deuteronomy 17:6 “6 On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.”
Deuteronomy 19:15 “15 “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.”
Passages in John that talk about multiple witnesses (John 5:30-47)
John the Baptist
Jesus’ works
The Father
The Scriptures
Various people say that Jesus is the Christ.
Jesus Is His Own Witness (v.14)
John 8:14 ESV
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
He Can be his own witness because light doesn’t need a witness.
The Light Shines = Photizo
To light up; expose; bring to light
Morris: “Light, in a sense, bears witness to itself, though every other object in the world requires light in order to bear witness to itself. Light always illuminates, is never illuminated. Light is unique.”
Morris: “Light establishes its claim and does so, not by arguments, but by shining. Light must always be accepted for itself, and notwithstanding the objections of the blind.”
The light shines in the darkness
Into the darkness of this chaotic world.
Into the darkness of broken and fallen societies, and families…into the darkness and rebellion of our own hearts.
2 Corinthians 4:3-6 “3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Point 3: Jesus’ hour had not yet come (v.19-20).
Mission of Jesus...
As the Religious leaders begin to argue with Jesus.
Jesus appeals to his own mission and identity to show that he is the true light.
John 8:14 “14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.”
John 8:16 “16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.”
Where he came from: heaven
Where he is going: heaven
Sent by the Father…to accomplish his mission.
Second Witness
Jesus doesn’t need a second witness.
But the Father serves as His second witness.
John 8:18 “18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.””
Application: Our job: bear witness about the light (John the Baptist)
John 1:8 “8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.”
You are sent from God
he has you in a particular family, in a particular neighborhood, in a particular job, with your particular friends
Why?
To bear witness about the light
That people might believe in Jesus and be saved.Know Jesus & Know the Father (v.19)
Application: Word of Warning…Only One light.
John wasn’t the light
You aren’t the light
I am not the light
There is only one light
Why do we need this caution?
People are prone to wanting the praise and approval of man:
Paul talked about this
Galatians 1:10 “10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Simple and Freeing Message?
Reminder of our Purpose as a Church
Glorifying God by displaying and proclaiming Jesus
Lights that point to Him
In the way we live. In the words we say.
Not to us…not to us…but to God be the glory!
What prevents division in churches.
Unified around the essential…the ultimate thing.
That’s our focal point.
John talks about our identity like this:
Children of Light
John 12:35-36 “35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.”
Our Job As Children of Light:
Believe in the Son, and you will become sons of light.
Come to the living water, and that water will flow out from your heart.Jesus is the true light:
There is only one light…one Christ…one mediator between God and man…one savior...
It’s in him alone that we believe and therefore have eternal life.
Keep Jesus—the light—at the center of your life and the church.
And then as you become a child of light…that light will shine from you in your own life…the light of Jesus will shine through.
You can’t give what you don’t have.
Have the light…have a personal relationship with Jesus.
Be a joyful, passionate disciple of Jesus.
Why do we bear witness?
Glory of Jesus
Good of people: Darkness is a bad place
How Jesus Judges
v.15…different than the way the world judges
ESV Study: “That is, according tot he natural understanding and human standards of this world. When Jesus says, ‘I judge no one,’ he means that during his earthly ministry he did not come as judge of the world but as its Savior (see 3:17; 12:47). However, Jesus’ coming does itself provide a basis for division and thus ‘judgment’ in another sense (see 3:19; 9:39), and at a later time Jesus will come to judge the entire world (see 5:22, 27, 29; 12:48). In yet another sense, where ‘judge’ means ‘rightly evaluate,’ Jesus does judge events and people throughout his earthly ministry (see 5:20; 7:24; 8:16, 26).”
1 Sam 16:7 “7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.””
Jesus knew what was in man.
John 2:25 “25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.”
Characterizations of the Pharisees (Bruce Milne)
They were ignorant of Jesus’ mission (v.14)
Where Jesus was from; what he came to do; and where he was going
They judged merely by human standards (v.15)
They aren’t united with the Father, so they can only judge by external appearances.
They are ignorant of Jesus’ person (v.19)
Therefore: They Reject the Light
And refuse to become children of light
Watch out for False Lights
2 Corinthians 11:13-14 “13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

Transition to Point 3:

Point 1: Jesus is the light (v.12)
Point 2: Jesus is his own witness (v.13-18)
Point 3: Jesus’ hour had not yet come (v.19-20)

Point 3: Jesus’ Hour Had Not Yet Come (v.19-20)

John 8:19–20 ESV
19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
Their thinking continues to be on a human…merely physical level.
Where is your father?
John 8:20 ESV
20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
Location:
Life Application: “The Temple Treasury was located in the Court of Women. In this area, 13 collection boxes were set up to receive money offerings. Seven of the boxes were for the Temple tax; the other 6 were for freewill offerings. On another occasion, a widow placed her money in one of these boxes, and Jesus taught a profound lesson from her action (Luke 21:1-4).
ESV: “The treasury as a structure is mentioned in Josephus and likely was located adjacent to the Court of the Women. The NT occurrences of this Greek term may indicate either a collection box for the treasury or the treasury structure itself. Furthermore, in John 8;20 the Greek proposition (en), translated as ‘in the treasury,’ can mean ‘in the vicinity of’ (i.e., ‘at’ or ‘by’); thus it need not be assumed that Jesus and the disciples had access to the secured halls that stored the immense wealth of the temple.”
Morris: “There were thirteen trumpet-shaped collection boxes there, each with its inscription showing the use to which its contents would be put.
Court of Women
Next to the treasury
Not called the court of women because only women could be there but because women could not go beyond this point.
My Hour Has Not Yet Come
To shine my light in all it’s splendor
Death
Resurrection
Ascension (Glorification)
My Hour Still Hasn’t come
still waiting for the day when there will be no more need for sun or moon or stars.
For Jesus will be the only light we will need.

Extras

Reformation: “In Jesus’ time, candles were used as part of the celebration of the Feast of Booths. During this feast, the rock that provided water in the wilderness and the pillar of fire that provided light and guidance were remembered (Ex. 13:21). The rock pointed to Jesus (1 Cor. 10:4), and he also is the light to which the pillar of fire as a type pointed. Since God is light (1 John 1:5), Jesus’ words amount to a claim of deity. Again, “I am” points back to Ex. 3:14.
Life Application: “Jesus was speaking in the part of the Temple where the offerings were put (8:20), where candles burned to symbolize the pillar of fire that led the people of Israel through the wilderness (Exodus 13:21,22). In this context, Jesus called himself the light of the world. The pillar of fire represented God’s presence, protection, and guidance. Jesus brings God’s presence, protection, and guidance.”
Lit every night or remain unlit on the final night…is unclear.
William Cook…The pillar of cloud by day and fire by night was with the Israelites int eh wilderness as a sign of God’s presence. it saved them from the threatened destruction from the Egyptian army.
Exodus 14:19–25 ESV
19 Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, 25 clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.”
And led them through the wilderness to the Promised Land. So in three successive chapters we find Exodus and wilderness imagery.
John 6—manna [bread of life]
John 7—water form the rock [living water]
John 8—pillar of fire [light of the world]
“As Israel followed the light from the land of Egyptian slavery through the wilderness to the Promised Land, so believers follow Jesus as ‘the Light of life’. Jesus fulfills Tabernacles!.”
Leon Morris
“And it was important to the Christians that the Christ fulfilled all the spiritual truths to which the feasts pointed. Now the brilliant candelabra were lit only at the beginning of the Feast of Tabernacles; there is dispute as to the number of nights on which the illumination took place, but none as to the fact that at the close of the feast it did not. In the absence of the lights Jesus’ claim to the Light would stand out the more impressively. In favor of this view is also the fact that the candelabra were lit in the Court of the Women, the most frequented part of the Temple, and the very place in which Jesus delivered his address.”
Other OT References
Isaiah 60:19-22 “19 The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. 21 Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I might be glorified. 22 The least one shall become a clan, and the smallest one a mighty nation; I am the Lord; in its time I will hasten it.”
Revelation 21:23-24 “23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it,”
Zechariah 14:5-8 “5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. 6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. 8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.”
Isaiah 42:6-7 “6 “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.”
Isaiah 49:6 “6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.””
refer back to other references of light and darkness
John 1:4-9 “4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”

Application: Follow the Light
Life Application: “What does it mean to follow Christ? As a soldier follows his captain, so we should follow Christ, our commander. As a slave follows his master, so we should follow Christ, our Lord. As we follow the advice of a trusted counselor, so we should follow Jesus’ commands to us in Scripture. As we follow the laws of our nation, so we should follow the laws of the Kingdom of Heaven.”
1 Cor 1:10-12 “10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.””
