1) Noah Believed God’s Warning.
a) “By faith Noah, being warned of God concerning event yet unseen…”
b) The surrounding culture was completely corrupt.
i) “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
ii) God regretted that he made man, “And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” Genesis 6:5-7
c) Noah found favor with God.
i) There can be no greater reward than having the pleasure of God.
(1) God said of Jesus, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
(2) This is grace, God’s unmerited favor.
ii) Noah’s character was the result of his worship.
(1) A righteous man. – innocent, upright, devout
(2) Blameless in his generation – unscathed, without fault among his peers, honest
(3) Why? Noah walked with God. His worship of God made him walk differently.
d) Noah believed God’s warning of a coming deluge, even though he had never seen such a thing.
2) Noah Built Upon God’s Word.
a) “By faith Noah … in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household.”
b) Noah structured his life around the command of God.
i) It was his only hope of salvation.
ii) It was his guide in construction.
c) He was careful to follow God’s instructions.
i) Verse 22, “Noah did all that God commanded him.”
ii) 7:5, “Noah did all that God commanded him.”
iii) 7:16, “as God had commanded him. And the Lord shut him in.”
(1) “Covered inside and out with pitch.” Made of gopher wood (cypress?).
(a) So that the waters of judgement would not penetrate it.
(b) When you are in Christ you are sealed by the blood from the judgment.
(2) Jesus is the door, the Lord shuts you in.
3) Noah Became an Heir of Righteousness by Faith.
a) “By this he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
i) Noah’s words condemned the world.
(1) He was a preacher of righteousness. (2 Peter 2:5)
(2) Jesus said he came not to condemn but to save. “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” John 3:17-18
ii) Noah’s works condemned the world.
(1) He obeyed God when others weren’t.
(2) The people went on with life as normal in their wickedness.
(a) “For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:37-39
There are scoffers now as there were then.
2 Pet 3:2-13 “2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as so…”
