There is a comfort that comes with someone going on ahead of us and leading the way. An older sibling who raids the cookie jar for the younger sibling. A husband lovingly leading his wife. A captain leading the team out onto the field first. This week we learn of another type of forerunner. That of the Aaronic Priesthood in Leviticus 8-10, and especially the role of the High Priest. Admittingly, if you read these chapters some confusing, perplexing – even shocking – questions might come to mind. Why all the strange rituals and special clothing? Why was God so harsh against Nadab and Abihu? What is the Urim and Thummim anyway? These are good questions to ask. But let’s not miss the supreme significance of these chapters, and who they ultimately point to. Jesus! Our ultimate forerunner (Hebrews 6:20) and High Priest who leads us into the glorious presence of God. This week we’ll be exploring why Jesus is the “better High Priest” and why this is such good news for God’s people.
