The Book Of Matthew 28 chapters, 1,071 verses, and 23,684 words Grade level: 4.8 Author: The Holy Spirit of God by inspiration (2 Tim 3:15) through Matthew Theme: Christ the Saviour Date Written: A.D. 50 Key Verse: 5:17 Key Chapter: 12 Chapter One Theme: Coming of Christ Key verse: v.1 25 verses; 473 words Grade level: 16.4 Outline: 1. The People of Jesus. vs.1-17 2. The Proclamation About Jesus. vs.18-25 V.1 I. “Book” Greek - βίβλος (Strong’s) Properly the inner bark of the papyrus plant, that is, (by implication) a sheet or scroll of writing: - book. This is where we get the word Bible. “Bible” (Webster’s 1828) THE BOOK, by way of eminence; the sacred volume, in which are contained the revelations of God, the principles of Christian faith, and the rules of practice. It consists of two parts, called the Old and New Testaments. The Bible should be the standard of language as well as of faith. II. “Generation” The Greek word is “genesis”.
The phrase “the book of the generation” is found twice in the Bible: 1. In Genesis 5:1 2. Here in Matthew 1:1 In the first all die (1 Corinthians 15:22) In the second we read of no death.
The word refers to nature, natural, etc. which refers here to the pedigree of Joseph which is needed in the Jewish genealogy of Jesus Christ.
Luke’s genealogy is the actual line of Christ through Mary, while this one shows the careful hand of God in keeping a man in the line of Judah to raise the virgin born Son Of God.
III. “Jesus Christ”
The first name Jesus describes the Mission (Matthew 1:21) “Jesus” is the translation of the Hebrew word “Joshua”. He is the Lord, Leader, and Lover of us all.
The second name Christ describes the Messiah (John 1:41) We See His Royal Lineage. “Son of David” We See His Racial Lineage. “Son of Abraham” We See His Righteous Lineage. Luke 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, “This is my beloved Son” (Matthew 3:11) Preached at VBC 7/18/2018
