Foundation of a Church

The number one thing to the foundation is the Gospel.
God Made a way for us out of brokenness
He has given us His Son.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Hebrews 10:10–14 ESV
And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
2. The Gospel is simply this:
Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and God raised Him from the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
In accordance with the scriptures. Meaning that this was foretold. This was meant to happen.
But look at the beginning of the Word of God.
Genesis 1:1 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
God didn’t create sin in the beginning. God knew sin was going to come into the world. He still created it anyways.
But because of Sin we have to repent and believe the Gospel.
3. We just have to repent and believe the Gospel
Mark 1:15 ESV
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
So why do I bring this up.
We as believers make the church
We can not forget that there was not a building everywhere Jesus went. Now I am not asking that the church stop everything, turn off the lights and go outside. That is not it at all. But too often we forget that this building means nothing.
1 Corinthians 3:9 ESV
For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
WE are God’s fellow workers.
WE ARE GOD’s Building!
The members of the body of christ make the church.
1 Corinthians 12:12–13 ESV
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Kingdom-Focused vs Church-Focused
What do I mean by this?
Church-Focused slide
When you are church focused, here is what happens.
The Gospel becomes personal salvation and atonement for sins which is factual but the way this is portrayed it meant for me and me only I don’t need to spread the word.
Disciple is all about membership or program participation. How many areas can I serve in? Can I be in all programs to get closer to God
Society of Church Focus is indifferent and disengaging. When you go to a mega church where they have the pastor on the large screen but he is in an entirely different state. It is not welcoming. Doesn’t welcome outsiders.
Church - Building or Institution. How do I make the biggest building that everyone will want to come to only.
Let’s Look at the other end of the spectrum
Kingdom-Focused Slide
When you become Kingdom Focused, the Gospel is for EVERYONE not just for one person that looks the part
Disciple means the person hears and obeys the Word, subject to the King. Wants to follow God in every way.
Society of kingdom focus is engaging, Neighbor love
Church is Ecclesia, the people or ambassadors of the King
Ecclesia is the greek word for assembly
Matthew 16:18 ESV
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
