All these were commended?
Why?
Because of their faith
They did not receive their promises
God provided their promises
They would only be perfected with us
They were asked to believe that he who promised was faithful and that one day they would indeed be made perfect (Heb 4:9-10)
They looked forward because of their faith (Heb 11:13-16)
Some of them received a foreshadowing of hte promises, but none of them received all that God has for his people in their lives.
Their expectations remained unment.
At the end of the day they had nothing to show for their endurance, except their faith.
But luckily for them, that was all they needed.
Christ was what they were looking forward to, and Christ himself endured that he might receive the joy that was set before him (Heb 12:1-2)
Application
When the balance sheet is tallied, what will make the difference for you is whether or not you have faith
That should be convicting, because all of us would really like to stack our success up against our failures
That should be comforting, because all of us have a whole list of failrues
At the same time, if you and I have faith, we ought to step out in faith and take risks for the sake of the gospel.
