Introduction
Insincerity, falsehood, hypocrisy, and false worship.
These are dangers for all who call upon the name of the Lord.
Worship is the key.
It tells the tale.
We can go through the motions.
We can do all the steps in what we believe are the right order.
We can check all the boxes.
Yet, if our heart is full of wickedness we are described as an abomination.
Today, I want to warn the wicked who are completely wicked because they are apart from Christ.
But I also want to warn believers that we might not be found in the state of false worship.
Today we will see that right worship is acceptable before God, discipline awaits the wicked and that there is no place to hide before the eyes of God.
v.8 Right Worship
What is it that makes worship right before God?
-is it form?
I would argue that form can be important.
We should only worship God in ways that He has said are right.
-However, I would also say that the form of worship is not the chief issue
Is it the location of worship?
-we know during the OT times that the tabernacle and later the temple were the places for specific types of worship to take place
-but we would not say that that was the only place that God was worshipped in the OT
-In response to a question about the location of worship Jesus answered very clearly
What is the key to proper worship?
-spirit and truth?
-it is about the disposition of the worshipper
-the heart
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord
-someone who worships from a heart that is not right before God is participating in insincere worship
“Religious zeal is no substitute for integrity”
Even we who are in Christ can be so consumed with form, location, or letter that we allow our hearts to be darkened with our own desires and we lose sight of God’s desires.
-obedience apart from love is cold legalism
-love part from obedience is a license to sin
If you are here and do not know Christ and seek to worship Him your worship is an abomination.
If you are here and you know Him but worship with a heart that has drifted into selfish desire or coldness you too could be worshipping in abomination.
BUT, the Upright are His delight
-have you ever thought about the possibility of your prayers being a delight to God
-some of your translations say “acceptable” but there is joy infused in this acceptibility
-delight really does capture it
You can in fact be a great delight to the Lord in your prayers, worship, acts of devotion, and obedience
-if you are upright
-straight, right
This speaks of the reality of the heart before God
-upright in heart producing upright actions
-only possible in repentance and faith before the Lord
-there we can be the delight of the Lord
Charles Bridges says “the reader should ponder this awful question: what am I? what is my service when on my knees before God an abomination or a delight?”
Not Just the Prayers, the Way
-wicked worship goes hand in hand with wicked ways
The wicked man can never worship rightly
-Christian, when is it you have made the most sinful choices
-when is it you had the coldest motivations?
-I would dare say it is when you had gotten into a cycle of sin, unrepentance, and insincere worship
-when our way goes wrong, our worship will and vice versa
“When my way grows drear, precious Lord linger near”
-”Hear my cry hear my call hold my hand lest I fall take my hand precious Lord Lead me Home”
-the only way out of the abominable way is right worship
-calling out to God
-we can only walk in righteousness when bathing in the love of Christ
-our love from Christ compels our righteous path
-when our love for Christ grows cold our way and our worship grows in abomination
-but there is a way out
-turning to HIM!
Only Him!
-only in Him can our ways be made right and our prayers be a great delight to our Lord
If We Persevere in Abomination v.10-11
-if the delight of the Lord is not our aim
-we have a clear result
-harsh discipline
-discipline is for the children of God
-correction will turn back those who have forsaken the way if they are of the children of God
-those who refuse the correcting hand of God will walk headlong into judgment
-correction from God is a gift
-has your heart grown cold?
-has your way grown selfish?
-is the love of Christ the central motivation of your way?
-is your prayer and worship upright?
-what is the motivation of your heart?
Are you Deceiving Yourself?
-are you believing your own mail?
-giving in to the lie that your works are enough?
-that your cold obedience is pleasing to God?
-that your lack of love for Christ and others can be overlooked?
-you cannot hide from God
-weare an open book to God?
-just because we convince ourselves we are right or delightful does not mean we are upright and a delight before God
Delight or abomination?
righteousness or wickedness?
