We human beings tend to approach a lot of things in a transactional way. Gifts, favours, relationships, religion… they can easily become about an undefined, exchangeable currency. Perhaps this is the default way we view sacrifices in the Old Testament – as the human end of the God-people bargain? But as we look at five types of sacrifices in Leviticus 1–7, we see that’s not what it’s about. It’s about, as we saw last week, our relationship with God and how we can be right before him. And this becomes even clearer when we consider how each of the sacrifices is fulfilled in Jesus, and how his gospel plays out in our sacrificial worship today.
