2 Peter 3:9 (NASB95) — 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

John the Baptist preached the Kingdom to come

Jesus preached the Kingdom to Come.

Are we still preaching the kingdom to come or are we as Christians restless that is taking so long and that we might be a little embarrassed that the kingdom is still not here.

so much embarrassed that we stop looking and we are busy trying to mold this world into our own image of the kingdom.

The great commission is still on. Our Lord preached the kingdom and after 2000 years we too must be preaching the kingdom of God to the hearts of the world and let Jesus do the kingdom work.

Luke 4:38–44 (NASB95) — 38 Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her. 39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them. 40 While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them. 41 Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ. 42 When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43 But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Jesus and His Disciples were now down in Capernaum. The people of course, Had heard of his miracles of healing in Jerusalem during the Passover week. They heard of the man whose son was healed while Jesus was still far off away from Capernaum. The Great healer was here! All those with needs were coming to Him that they might become well.

The people were seeking a solution to their temporal problems that they might cope with day-to-day living. And Jesus was answering their needs.

But would the people look past their needs for the issue of an eternal kingdom.

Luke 7:18–23 (NASB95) — 18 The disciples of John reported to him about all these things. 19 Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” 20 When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’ ” 21 At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. 22 And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 “Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”

Jesus had yet to make a public pronouncement that He is the Christ. That is not yet in God’s timing.

Why? you may ask

How often does Jesus tell others not to say anything?

Why did he not tell the Samaritan woman not to tell?

And he was not so straight forward answering with John the Baptist either.

For if the people had prematurely received Jesus as the Messiah the people would have rebelled against Rome. IN that rebellion whether the Jews would have been successful or Rome destroying the temple where Jesus would ride into and leaving the land so flooded with crucifixions one would not be able to determine which one was Jesus, and which one was someone else.

How would the story of Jesus even be noticed when all of Israel was at war?

Jesus at this point was not announcing the king but the kingdom. It was the good news of the kingdom.

Luke 4:41 (NASB95) — 41 Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.

The demons remember are battling for the postponement of the Kingdom. It is their plan to get Jesus to the cross. Perhaps they were attempting to site a riot for this very reason.

But little did these demons know that at the cross would be their own defeat.

1 Corinthians 2:7–8 (NASB95) — 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;

That pronouncement will not come until the hour (occasion) that Jesus will make known to the People when he will ride into the temple complex on a mule; To the Sanhedrin during the trial and to Pilate.

So, the people up this point would not know.

Jesus would ask His disciples the question pertaining to His identity.

Matthew 16:13–17 (NASB95) — 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Blessed yes, because among others leading the way there would be Peter giving the announcement.

Acts 2 as he spoke to the Crowd at Antioch on the Day of Pentecost.

Starting with verse 15

Acts 2:14 (NASB95) — 14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words

And he would finish

Acts 2:36 (NASB95) — 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Luke 4:42–43 (NASB95) — 42 When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43 But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”

εὐαγγελίζω[euaggelizo /yoo·ang·ghel·id·zo/] v.[1]

Bring Glad tidings. To pronounce the good news.

So much of the Gospel and Jesus teachings is in effect the Kingdom itself. That the Kingdom is at hand.

The Parables that Jesus taught were concerning the kingdom.

Notice that Jesus did not say that he come to make the world a better place.

Notice that the gospel is not a social adjustment to fix the woes of this world through rebellion.

It is the message, the news which is the power of salvation.

What is this kingdom that the hearts and minds of the people should be focused on?

What is this Kingdom?

It is God’s earthly kingdom, Christ Millennial rule which extends into all of eternity.

It is Characterized by old testament writings as…

Established by God (Dan. 2:44) Eternal (Dan. 7:27) Christ’s direct rule (Zech. 9:9-10) Earthly (Zech. 14:9) Land promises realized (Gen. 15:18-21) Israel’s preeminence (Isa. 49:22-23) Millennial Temple (Ezek. 40‒46) Millennial David (Jer. 30:9) Righteousness (Isa. 9:6-7) Curse curtailed (Isa. 65:20, 22) Peace (Isa. 2:4) Prosperity (Amos 9:13-14; Isa 65:22) Topographical changes (Ezek. 47:1-12) Immediate answers to prayer (Isa. 65:24)

IN one regard many, even evangelicals have rejected this kingdom flat out.

Many Christians today have given up preaching about the kingdom to come and are presenting their own plan called the social gospel. Creating their own millennium. After two thousand years many, even Christians and churches have abandoned God’s plan and they are seeking to fix the world. You will hear such a phrase as

“Doing Kingdom of work.”

The Kingdom is the work of Christ upon his return as he still sits at the right hand of the Father as his enemies have yet been made a footstool for his feet.

Jesus’ mission is our mission which is the great commission.

Matthew 28:18–20 (NASB95) — 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

This is what Jesus did and this is what we are to do.

We are not here to make this world our home to plant a flag in the devil’s world. we are to live in the light of eternity looking forward to the kingdom which is yet to be as we continue to stand upon the promises of God.

2 Peter 3:13–15 (NASB95) — 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,

How are we encouraged

1 Thessalonians 4:16–18 (NASB95) — 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

It is not fixing the world but receiving the message of Christ and fixing our hearts on the hope of salvation and his Kingdom to come.
