“The Truth”
v 28 - The purpose of the cross was a process of glorification (John 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.)
v. 29 - Jesus was showing the natural connection of communion with God to obedeince to God. We are unable to be in the presence of God because of our sinful state but through the Holyness of Jesus we may come to the Father.
v.30 - There is a promise played out in this scripture
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:
It shall not return unto me void,
But it shall accomplish that which I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Although many believed it was a superficial belief that Jesus begins to challenge.
v.31 - Jesus turns His attention to those who believed. His connection of continuing in His word to proof of discipleship was to this particular audience due to the Gospel not having reaching completion.
v. 32 - When we know the truth it is a chain breaking revelation in that the lies and deceit of Satan no longer are binding. We are set free! This verbage was not by accident for we see Jesus striking the right cord in order to bring out their greatest hang up.
v.33 - Here those who believed are quickly back in opposition to Jesus’ words. The thought here is spiritual oppression not physical because the Jews were in fact in bondage to Rome.
v. 34 - Jesus quickly reminds them as well as us all of our fallen state. A willingness to sin against God shows an allegiance to sin. It is an act of treachary when we sign on with sin. We harm ourselves, our loved ones and our relationship with God when we sin.
v.35 - This verse is more than likely referencing the old testament Exodus 21:2 “If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.”
v.36 - Here Jesus is showing the superiority of the sonship over the one serving by obligation. The authority is given to the Son to set men free and not the bond worker. The Son remains forever.
v.37 - Jesus begins His testimony agianst those who had a profession of faith but no possession of the Christ himself. “But ye seek to kill me”. This will be the death blow to both the pharasee and believing Jews.
v.38 - Jesus speaks what He sees with His Father but Jesus condems these Jews by testifying that they do what they have seen with their father.
v.39 - Jesus tells them that if they were truly like Abraham then they would do as Abraham did.
v.40 - “but now you seek to kill me” Jesus testifies as an eye witness “this is not what Abraham did”.
v.41 - Jesus refers to them having a different father but then they reflect to being God’s children. This of course is in contrast to them first as identifying with Abraham being their father.
v.42 - Jesus shows that the only response toward Him for those of God is love.
v.43 - We cannot hear that which our ears aren’t open to receive. Jesus was speaking to self-righteous men that need not a savior.
v.44 - Jesus’ conclusion about the audience He was speaking is this(1.) you want to murder me (2.)the devil was a murderer from the beginning(3.) you must be his children.
v.45 - The devil is the father of lies, Jesus spoke the truth these Jews hated Jesus because truth.
v.46 - Jesus charges them to name what sin He had fallen to. He is true, Holy, God so He asked “why do you not believe Me?”
v.47 - Jesus’ final judgement is this those who are of God hear the words of God so then those who are not His cannot hear the true freedom giving words of God.
