In The Last couple of weeks...
In The Last couple of weeks...
We looked at some beginning ideas and confirmations of the Holy Spirit.
Our passage a couple of weeks ago was the Baptism of Jesus.
Yes, Jesus was baptized, taken under water by John and when He came up God said that famous statement
17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
God introduced us to his Son. “This is my Son”
When God said that… He was simply re-stating what had been for eternity. God is well pleased with His only begotten Son.
The Father Creates, The Son Redeems and the Spirit Maintains.
You can’t have a two-legged milk stool… The only way that it works is with all three.
We, you and I are “called” into this “Trinity” not to be a part of the Trinity but to use the Trinity, the tools for evangelism and its members as we reach others for Christ.
I know a lot of people… and I love meeting new people, I love hearing their story and I love hearing stories about The Valley.
I am a late comer to the Valley. We got here in September 2018.
I’ve discovered something… Everyone, yes everyone has a story. Of how God has set them here in this community, working or working at being retired. Raising a family or watching others as they raise children.
We know many people who are closed off, who have no connection nor want any connection with us.
“Us” as an association of neighbors, or as members of First Baptist or any church group. Some in our community resist even really knowing family members.
We do have some excuses for not engaging other people
Excuses for not engaging include,
They are too liberal
Too conservative
Too “Old School”
Too modern
They are Roman Catholic, Baptist, LDS, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, and I’m not!
They are white, African American, Mexican American, Dutch, German, Irish and I’m not
What if we finally, finally, I mean in a FOREVER sort of way dropped all of that and behaved like all others are people like us.
Surprise… Others, have many needs just like we do.
So how are we to know… In a new or old situation how can we talk and act that draws people towards us and then hopefully towards the Gospel.
Your life is a testimony to God’s Spirit working in you for the benefit of the Kingdom of God
Some of you have said to me… I’m not much about talking about my faith… I say “GOOD!!”
But this next part is VERY difficult...
That means that your life, the life that you share should show the love of God that is found only in a relationship with Jesus. And that your life can and does and has drawn others to Jesus.
That’s difficult… It can be done, it is being right here at First Baptist. Gallo, Bethany and their whole family lives up those values. Sharing Jesus with and without words.
Either of them will tell you… this is just something we do.
There is a bit of mystery there and I’m going to leave it.
IF your really interested ask Bethany, ask Gallo, ask Sophia, Annalise what they do to show the love of God that is found in a relationship with Jesus.
St. Francis of Assisi has been credited with this, even though there is little evidence he actually said it...
We work hard not to fall into a shallow faith that keeps us from speaking Truth in favor of only works. "Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.”
Let’s draw back to that scripture verse from Matthew3.17
17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
God set this up so that there would be a beginning place in His church… The Ecclesia (literally, “The called out ones) were part of a new “thing” with God’s people.
The “thing” is
the life we live,
how we live it,
how we share it with the billions in the world who have never heard about Grace and Mercy that was delivered by God, the one and only in the form of Jesus Christ,
Whom God is WELL PLEASED!!!
Speaking of that… We are going to have a couple opportunities to hear and see some missionaries this summer.
Our son Josh, works for Africa Inland Mission, he is also a seminary student, he will be bringing a message
and
Jim Adkins, our chicken missionary will be in town to give a message for us and The Christian Reformed Church, a ministry update and to hang out for a few days.

Our Scripture this week is from 1Samuel 10.
This passage in on page 232 of the bibles in the racks ahead of you. There is also Spanish/English bibles in the back two rows for our Spanish only speakers.
BIG IDEA: The Holy Spirit is given to empower us!
Let’s get to scripture for today...
Saul was just crowned King...
5 After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying.
6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
7 Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
8 Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day.
The Spirit did not come universally like it does when we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord.
First of all… Aren’t you grateful that the Spirit is here, real, active and engaged with us.
God is giving directions through His prophets that have come down the hill with all kinds of racket!

6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
King Saul was a benefactor in this coming of the Spirit.
We know that in the beginning Saul was a “good king.”
But as time past Saul succumbed to the sins of past kings and future kings.
They traded the love of God for the love of power, money, land and a host of other “Non-Godly” things.
6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
So Saul, surrounded by his new court . He met the Prophets as they came down the hill.
In the Judges period, this period, prophets carried with them the Holy Spirit. A group of prophets came down and brought the Holy Spirit with them.
To Saul and to others that God chose to empower with the Spirit to do his work.
Notice that very last part of the verse 6...
“…you will prophecy with them and be turned into another man.”
Now we cannot impose our Christian, New Testament understanding and values on this statement
You can’t say that Saul is a Christ follower. In His context, Saul is empowered to do great things by the power of Holy Spirt for God who called him
Verse 7 is interesting..
7 Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
The “signs” of the Holy Spirit were brought by the Prophets and were now given to Saul.
In a similar way that we develop some muscle memory when we do repeated tasks. We can do it with our eyes closed...
God powered Saul’s hands to do good for God’s Spirit was with him.
And Saul’s life was one of ups and downs. Strides of God designed and God empowered activities then of completely ignoring God and of course God withdrew His Spirit.
When God sends His Spirit, He empowers us to do great things. When we resist or deny The Spirit, He lets us to our own sinful ends.
That was the ultimate case with Saul.
8 Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day.
In verse 8 the purposes of “burnt and peace offerings” was to satisfy God in the old covenant. God was to be satisfied by the offerings that were given to him...
And to think… By accepting Christ in the economy of Grace and Mercy everything we do, or think, or act should be controlled by the Spirit.
We know the spirit has given US a set of rules and gifts for dealing with each other.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
That’s how we are to reign in our fallen sinful selfs and we are to use the Fruit of The Spirit to have a universal way that we reach and treat others.
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day.
So what is a good Old Testament understanding of giving Saul “another heart” or an “overturned heart.”
He didn’t have a heart transplant… at least not that we know.
The prophetic spirit had come upon him; and to Saul it was personal, His evidence of the truth of God’s word that had been spoken to him.
We as converts to Christianity have the sanctifying power of the Gospel, The Guidance of the Holy Spirit and the presence of The Son.
God is available for us to use the Holy Spirit that was given to us. But we DO NOT have the option of using the Spirit for some things and then turning Him off for others.
We we accept Christ we MUST realize that from that point forward the Spirit is inside of us and if we allow him will drive us towards God’s directive for the world.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
And He God the Father, And He God the Son, And He God the Spirit will be with us until the end and we are Heaven bound.
Let’s return to our BIG IDEA… The Holy Spirit is given to empower us!
We have seen today how The Spirit came to King Saul. He was given “signs” from the Prophets
Saul used the Spirit to accomplish what God asked Saul to do.
We know that King Saul was righteous… Until he wasn’t
The Spirit is given to us, permanently at our salvation, along with gifts to reach the world for Christ.
Finally we are continually called to disciple, baptize and teach.
