Jesus and The Signs of His Deity

John 2:11 NASB95
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
Signs? What is a sign?
Dictionary of Bible Themes
Signs - Miraculous or supernatural confirmations of the existence and power of God or the miraculous demonstration of spiritual authority on the part of an individual.
Dictionary of Bible Themes
Purposes of Signs - Signs are given to confirm God’s word. They may warn the rebellious or encourage the faithful. People may seek signs as a result of a genuine desire to serve God.

Signs are given to demonstrate God’s power

Deuteronomy 34:10–12 NASB95
10 Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 for all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, 12 and for all the mighty power and for all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
Sign or Signs in the 4th Gospel
John 2:11 NASB95
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
John 2:18 NASB95
18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”
John 2:23 NASB95
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.
John 3:2 NASB95
2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
John 4:48 NASB95
48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.”
John 4:54 NASB95
54 This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
John 6:2 NASB95
2 A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick.
John 6:14 NASB95
14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
John 20:30 NASB95
30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;

I. What is the Significance of the Sign (Turning Water into Wine)?

A. To reveal the deity of Jesus - his sovereignty over matter
John 2:11 NASB95
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
Manifested - reveal, to make clear
GLORY. The Hebrew word so translated, kābôd, means the “weight” and therefore the “worth” of something—as we speak of someone whose word “carries weight.” The glory of God is the worthiness of God,
B. The disciples believed in Him.
There are two responses to the miracles of Jesus - believe and reject

II. Why wine? What is the significance of wine for the Jews?

It could have been a symbolic action. In the OT, abundant wine (and oil or milk) are signs of the age of fulfillment: Amos 9:13-14; Isaiah 25:6-9
Amos 9:13–14 NASB95
13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “When the plowman will overtake the reaper And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; When the mountains will drip sweet wine And all the hills will be dissolved. 14 “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel, And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, And make gardens and eat their fruit.
Isaiah 25:6–9 NASB95
6 The Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, And refined, aged wine. 7 And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples, Even the veil which is stretched over all nations. 8 He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken. 9 And it will be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
Jesus’ conversion of such a large quantity of water into wine would indicate that the long-awaited kingdom of God had arrived. God himself had drawn near in the person and ministry of Jesus, and the fulfillment of the promise of abundant blessings was beginning to be fulfilled.

Interpretation:

John narrates to the readers the miracle of turning water into wine to show that Jesus is God in the flesh (John 1:14). Being divine, Jesus has the power to recreate and change matter (in the atomic level change). The sign of turning water into wine is a foretaste of the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.

Reflection:

I. The presence of Christ made the difference in that wedding. In whatever life situation you are in, do not forget to invite Jesus and include Him in your plans and activities. His presence will surely make a difference in your life.
II. The Bride and the groom did not realize that a miracle had occurred without their knowledge, yet they enjoy the benefits. In the same way, many times we have not realized nor were aware of the working of God in our lives, yet we enjoy the benefits.

Application:

I. Believe that Jesus is sovereign over everything - especially over your eternal destination!
II. Like the servants, obey Jesus to see His works unfold in your life.
