What does God accept? Faith that comes to Him on His terms.

Comes by the Blood of the Lamb

Hebrews 11:4 ESV
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
a) We must approach God by the way He has prescribed. Why was Able’s offering accepted, while his brother’s rejected?
i) Cain killed Able because his works were evil (1 John 3:12)
b) The brothers brought their offering to the “appointed place” on a certain day. Genesis 4:2
i) Cain’s offering was based on his own works, because he did not recognize his need for redemption.
ii) Cain’s offering did not conform to the word God had given for justification (genesis 3:21).
c) Able shows us that we must come to God by faith in the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb, not trust in our own works.
i) Notice the quality of the offering: the firstborn of the flock, the best.
ii) Notice the qualification of the offering: without shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Heb. 9:22).
(1) “The righteousness of Cain was his own righteousness. The righteousness of Able was faith in a sacrifice that looked forward to Christ’s sacrifice.” J. Vernon Mcgee.

Receives the Blessing of the Lord

a) Able was rewarded with imputed righteousness.
i) “so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar” (Matthew 23:35)
b) Able received an enduring testimony.
i) Though he is dead, Able still speaks.
(1) An incredible statement about a man who has no recorded word.
(2) He still speaks by his example of faith in the atoning work of the lamb.
ii) Able’s faith was fully realized in the person of Christ, the Lamb of God.
(1) We have come unto Christ, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Able. Hebrews 12:22-24
(2) Able’s blood cried out for justice, but Christ’s blood proclaims justification!
