This is from when they “plundered” the Egyptians, not by their own hand, but by the hand of God.
This was then to be given back to God freely, as a return gift of worship and right relationship.
Only 40 days for Israel to abandon God...
We look at this story and marvel at their foolishness, yet do the same thing...
God has good things in store for those who worship him.
Idolatry is foolishness, it only leads destruction and pain
IDOLATRY:
Worshiping anything that is not the true God.
Worship: to value as supreme, to trust, to obey, to put first in importance.
Our Idols are generally not golden images.
Things like:

Social Status
Relationship
Hobbies
Additions (alchohol, sex, gambling)
Activities such as:
Shopping
Going to the gym
Eating out
OR EATING
Good things that are blessings can become idols if elevated above God.
Children
Safety and security
I’m going to do this today, and tomorrow I’m going to church.
All through the old testament, including Exodus, this is described has “whoring”
