In Paradise
Last week we ended at a crucial moment...
“The mob shouted louder and louder…and their voices prevailed.”
For full disclosure, we are not going to get to the death of Jesus today, we are just going to linger over the period where he is led to and is on the cross.
Now…I gave that statement about the mob and their voices for a reason.
We are going to see that extend even to the crucifixion.

Scripture is a TALE of TWO Kingdoms, cities, mountains, powers

Let’s ask…WHY Grief Stricken?
It could be they are grieving the death of an innocent
But that happened all around them, nothing new
It could be they are grieving the death of a vision of Israel
If Jesus rules, then they are safe and their enemies are not
Rome has killed their children (Death of the innocents)
Religion & Rome have financially oppressed them
If we don’t have this in mind…then the next part won’t make sense.
It could come off as insensitive, but it is a warning to them.
The imagery used is from the Hebrew Bible.
The Author is drawing from the Old Testament to put this language together.
The instruction from Jesus is very specific to these “Daughters of Jerusalem”
Weep for yourselves, not me (Jeremiah, Lamentations, Laments)
Language of Exile, what they fear the most.
You will wish you had no children, because you will see them slaughtered.
Jeremiah says the valleys will be so full of tombs they will have to relocate to another valley.

Here is the question: What is meant by “THESE THINGS?”
Green trees, USUALLY refers to Israel in the LAND
Can mean the time people want mountains to bury them
Could be the time when women will wish they had no children
Could be this VERY MOMENT that is happening.
KEEP IN MIND…No one understands or knows what is happening behind the scenes
“If this can happen while the Son of God is here (tree is green) think of how evil will prevail when the Son of God is not here.”

Two sentences next to each other that are very important to draw us to something written previously.
Father forgive…gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
Ps 22:17-18 “I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”
FORGIVE them…THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING...
What are they doing?

How OFTEN do we see some CELL VIDEO of someone being BEATEN while other STAND AROUND and WATCH and SCOFF...
NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN...
When you read this…does it sound familiar?
We have read something like this before…in Luke.
There is a character we saw early on that uttered words like this...
Luke 4:3 “The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.””
Luke 4:9 “And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,”
Do you sense the similarity?
Who is running this show?
Again…whose words are these?
PROVE IT!

On the EXTREME OPPOSITE is the OTHER CRIMINAL
We have a rare moment of honestly and acknowledgement of one’s sin against other humans, recognition that Jesus is innocent, and Jesus has a Kingdom that he is coming into.
Jesus confirms the Kingdom…Paradise.
Last words…Beautiful
Father, Forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing
I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.
Interesting that he says “Today” you will be with me in Paradise.
This kind of kills off the whole suspicion that Jesus descends to the underworld and spends any kind of time there.
Pure, RAW, end of life revelations of what they think of God and THEIR STANDING before God.
I will save the distillation of Psalm 22 for next week when we look at the death of Jesus.
There is much to learn from that but we need to go back into the scriptures to find out what is happening.

Two opposite approaches to an EOL situation.
The first, is a throwback to Lamech in Genesis 4:23-24 One day Lamech said to his wives, “Adah (Adorn, Ornament) and Zillah (Shadow, Tremble, Quiver, Clanging Pans), hear my voice; listen to me, you wives of Lamech.
I have killed a man who attacked me, a young man who wounded me.
If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times, then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!”
The first criminal is throwback to CAIN…and his descendant LAMEN (Twisted King)
I fought the Roman’s, because God wants us to eliminate the enemies of God.
So, if you are the Son of God...
YOU OWE IT TO US TO SAVE YOURSELF AND US TOO.
VERSUS
I AM A CRIMINAL.
Jesus, please remember me when you are in your Kingdom.
Today you will be with me in Paradise
