Time
▾ Time
• What is time?
• Only defined by the relationship between two physical objects
▾ By the relative movement between two objects
• Like the hands of a clock
• Time is defined by the movement of creation
clocks were not synchronized until the railways
when the sun was right overhead, it was noon
the telegraph brought more need for synchronization
and now time belongs to Silicon Valley
things move so fast we cannot keep up
FOMO
I had teams all over the globe
regularly scheduled conference calls
and then it was over
everything went away
I did not realize how fast I was running 24/7
many experience this in the pandemic shutdown
many people went home, and found some rest
the great resignation
why work that second job to pay for childcare
why go back to the office
maybe I’ll just stay home and work a little more closely to my family’s schedule
children’s lives have a rhythm to them
if we are not there, we miss out, that’s why grandkids are such such a blessing
they grow up so quickly don’t they
if we blink, it is gone
this order is part of creation
and too much work gets in the way
Genesis 1 (NRSV)
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.”
And it was so.
16 God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.
17 God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness.
And God saw that it was good.
19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
signs for seasons and for days and for years
a natural order is an important part of the original creation
the natural order of everything in creation is VERY GOOD
Genesis 2 (NRSV)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude.
2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.
3 So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.
A WEEKLY HOLIDAY IS PART OF CREATION
“The Sabbath is the only holiday commanded in the Decalogue (Exod 20:8-11) and the only command grounded in creation (Exod 20:11).
It is mentioned by all sources and genres: prophecy (Isa 56:2-6; Jer 17:21-27), history (2 Kgs 11:5-9), poetry (Ps 92:Title; Lam 2:6), narrative (2 Kgs 4:23; Neh 13:15-22), and law (Exod 23:12; Neh 10:32-34).”
IF YOU PRAY ACCORDING TO ANCIENT TRADITION, YOU WILL PRAY PS 95 EVERY MORNING

Psalm 95 (NRSV)
1 O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
O that today you would listen to his voice!
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 when your ancestors tested me, and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.
10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said,
“They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they do not regard my ways.”
11 Therefore in my anger I swore, “They shall not enter my rest.”

Leviticus 23 (NRSV)
1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: These are the appointed festivals of the Lord that you shall proclaim as holy convocations, my appointed festivals.
3 Six days shall work be done; but the seventh day is a sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no work: it is a sabbath to the Lord throughout your settlements.
4 These are the appointed festivals of the Lord, the holy convocations, which you shall celebrate at the time appointed for them.
