Main Prayer

Hymn - I Know Whom I Have Believed

Reading

1 Timothy 1:12–20 ESV
I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Sermon

Priesthood of all believers
Guardians of the gospel of God’s Grace
instruct one another to not teach any different doctrine
Paul presents two concepts:
I though entirely unworthy have been commissioned to proclaim the gospel of God’s Grace
That grace and mercy was most gloriously display in my own conversion
1 Timothy 1:12 ESV
I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,
example of God’s Law lawfully used
Thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord - a gift of grace
he judged me trustworthy - not of my own doing but what His Grace si doing within me
“to bring about” obedience to His Service
1 Timothy 1:13 ESV
though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
He once was as those false teachers he describes
ridiculed the name of jesus
he sought to kill all Jesus’ followers
he wanted to destroy the gospel and faith in it
God bestowed his Grace and Mercy on Paul a sinner
Acting ignorantly in unbelief
Stir one another to Good Works
Hebrews 10:23–25 ESV
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Gard against sinning deliberately after receiving the knoweldge of truth
Hebrews 10:26–31 ESV
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Return..
1 Timothy 1:13 ESV
though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
1 Timothy 1:14 ESV
and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Abounding sin to super-abounding (overflowing) grace
overflowing / beyond measure / in excess
faith and love that are in Christ Jesus
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Love - Fruit of the Holy Spirit
1 Timothy 1:15 ESV
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
The true Gospel Message
Compare to the opposite
Paul uses the phrase Jesus used of himself
Pharisees - righteous or sinners (riffraff, scum, those who don’t live by God’s Law)
Paul addresses this attitude of the false teachers (self righteous)
“Pharisee” to “Chief of Sinners”
A fully pardoned sinner, is still a sinner
1 Timothy 1:16 ESV
But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Paul did not receive mercy to gain authority of Apostleship
He received mercy and his service as Apostle, to demonstarte Jesus patience and love
Likewise a Pastor is one who serves
1 Timothy 1:17 ESV
To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
King of the ages
Immortal - lives forever, never tires
Invisible
the only (unique & tangible) God
Honour & Glory (praise & adoration)
Forever & ever - without end
1 Timothy 1:18–20 ESV
This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Instruction to Timothy
As one who has received their orders (from God, commander in chief)
War against sin and the work of Satan
Literally - Satan inspired perversion of doctrine
holding on to faith & good conscience
in the midst of opposition
picture of sailor holding the course in the face of a storm
obeys the dictates of the Word as applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit
Ringleaders: Hy-men-aeus & Alexander
Named & expelled from the church
that they may not suffer the delusion of being a believer
thus given opportunity to repent
and also not to be in a position of blaspheme of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 11)

Closing Prayer

Doxology(read) –

NOT TO US BE GLORY GIVEN but to him who reigns above: Glory to the God of heaven for his faithfulness and love! What though unbelieving voices hear no word and see no sign, still in God my heart rejoices, working out his will divine.
