Lead Off Question

Have you ever been mad at someone?
How about angry?

Illustration

The time I was angry because Cash split the slushee in Dad’s truck.

Transition

Similar to myself, some of us, if not all of us, have at some point in our life been angry at another person, whether that is for something they did or did not heck. HONESTLY, some of you sitting in this room right now might be angry with someone else in this room!
Anger does not create unity, and it only tears down and causes things to deteriorate.

Bottom Line

Our faith restores what anger destroys.

Bible Verse

James 1:19–25 NIV
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

* Anger does not bear healthy fruit.

Breakdown

Anger brews into bitterness, which eventually brews into resentfulness, which eventually produces hatred.

Bottom Line

Our faith restores what anger destroys.

Bible Verse

James 1:21 NIV
Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

* Anger creates separation, not unification.

Breakdown

Our anger cannot save us, it will only further separate us. I cannot think of a relationship that was saved BECAUSE of anger!

Bottom Line

Our faith restores what anger destroys.

Bible Verse

James 1:22–25 NIV
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

* Anger creates a disregard for His direction.

Breakdown

When we are angry, we don't want to receive the direction that we need because we exist in denial. It only magnifies the wedge in the relationship.

Bottom Line

Our faith restores what anger destroys.
