The History of Corinth

1 Corinthians 1:1–3 (NIV)
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Corinth was a city in Greece, 45 miles southwest from Athens, just off the Corinthian Isthmus at the northern part of the Peloponnesus Peninsula.
Corinth was situated at the western side of the short 4 mile stretch of land that separated the gulf of Corinth from the Saronic Gulf
Corinth was a thriving city. It was called wealthy Corinth in Homer’s The Iliad in 1200 BC. Later it was under the control and rule of Philip II of Macedonia, Alexander the Great’s father. In 146 BC, the Romans destroyed Corinth, but in 46 BC, Julius Caesar re-established the city as a home for war veterans and freedman.
While it was a Greek colony, Corinth was know as the least Greek of the colonies and when Rome occupied it, it was the least Roman of all the colonies. Corinth has always allowed its multicultural inhabitants shape the belief and the workings of the city culture as a whole. There really is this melting pot feeling that comes out of Corinth.
The church in Corinth had been started by Paul. Paul arrives in Corinth likely alone as Silas and Timothy had not yet joined after being left behind in Macedonia as Paul trudged forward. Paul had experienced little success since heading out on this missionary journey

You Are Prepared

1 Corinthians 1:4–9 (NIV)
I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
